Headlights arent the same

I had both at same time for years. Thought the Boxster was more fun on the road for 99% of the time. My Turbo had DMS map and exhaust and KW suspension. Certainly gave it some character that the std one lacked. Still very fast cars. 420bhp doesnt sound alot these days but I drove a std car few months ago and it still felt brutally quick.

Not the same in fact, all the Gen 2 996s (the Turbo being the first to be launched) have lights of a more circular design than the Gen 1 996s, which were indeed shared with the Boxster.

Either that car changes hands pretty regularly, or its been for sale for a long time .... I remember window shopping and finding that car on many occasions.

Still desperately want it though!

Back to the headlights. Back when the gen 2 996 came out I thought the adoption of the turbo lights was a big step back in the right direction. I personally found the original 996 / boxter lights to be utterly hideous. For me a 911 really should have round lights though. /OCD.

Fantastic car and still the best 911 turbo IMO for the money, the 997 is obviously a better car but in relative terms you'd be looking at 40k for a leggy one, is it £20k better?
No.
I had an 02 Black 6T and it did everything very well, in fact due to my average driving skills i could cover ground far quicker than in my now owned GT2, albeit a professional driver in the GT2 would wipe the floor of the 6T obviously.

Would i have another 6T?
Yes but a cabriolet and i'd have to put an exhaust on to to add to the rather mundane sound they make.

just never seen the appeal of them. Cramped, looks dated, took Porsche 30 years to make them stable, little innovation, engine sounds aweful and they are common as muck. The 991 Turbo was a deathtrap. Perhapos I need to drive "a modern one".

Ah right I see - interesting, I've learnt something there, thanks (and the chap above!).

So, Gen 1 996 did share lights, Gen 2 (of which the turbo was the first) did not.

The 991 Turbo isn't out yet, and I seriously doubt it will be a deathtrap.

If my experience driving to Le Mans last weekend is anything to go by, I've given on fast cars - you simply cannot use them! My father had one of these a few years back - they really move!

Re. Earlier mentions of 997s, can be picked up for under £30k now but very spec dependent and will continue to lose money, can't see this dipping much lower than its price at the minute so would have this in a heartbeat

I sold my later 02spec 60k mile old car with full history and lots of money spent on it, bigger 997 6pot brakes, new tyres, clutch flywheel etc etc for 22k. I don't think its that cheap considering the miles to be honest.

At 20k can't be much more depreciation left. As has been said, a lot of car for the money. For 20k I'd buy this, run it for a few years then swap to a 997 once they have dropped a bit more.

This! I'd rather hold out for 997 prices to fall. The superior headlights and interior would make the wait worthwhile for me.

Thats What i say about everycar i want, but by the time its dropped to that price i find myself looking at the newer model (991 or whatever)and thinking id rather wait for that and it becomes a never ending cycle without every buying anything.

It has to be the biggest performance bargain out there.

I would just buy the 996 to be honest. The 997 has horrible bling tastic alloys and while the lights and interior are an improvement, the 997 Gen1 Turbo is (I hear) a much trickier car to drive quickly and is far more likely to bite you if you get it wrong and surely the whole point of the Turbo is making going very quickly, very easy.

On a side note I recently went out (as a passenger) in a 2011 GTR at some speed and was a jabbering wreck for weeks afterwards. I then went out in a 550 bhp (not that hard to achieve I was told) 996 Turbo and it made the GTR feel a little sluggish. A weapons grade car the 996 Turbo!

I like the 996, to me it shows Porsche's bravery in trying to modernise the 911 and explore new designs, rather than constantly cloning the 964 with updates.
Sadly the 996 was where this philosophy started and stopped. They chickened out with the 997 and the 991 is just yuck.
Sadly i can't even afford this bargain, but if i had the money i'd seek-out a 996 over all the other 911 models.
