This is an A-class sedan.

This is a CLA.

Merc has me utterly confused.
It created the A class. Then it made a sedan which they called the CLA (of which they also made an estate).
Then it went on to make a sedan of the A-class, which is the A-class sedan??

What's next, a 5 door Audi A5?
I don't understand the A Class saloon, it looks really awkward. I'm sure people will disagree strongly, but I think the CLA is a good looking car, you'd have to be mad to choose the A over one.

I might be walking into a whoosh parrot here, but...

Really? From the silver ones I posted, I find it impossible to distinguish them.

I'm aware there's a 5dr A5 hehe

Aren't those 2 A-Class' just one and the same, just with different names for different countries?
They look virtually the same from that picture, but my colleague convinced me they aren't.
If I look at the Merc configurator, there seems to be a CLA Coupe (which is the 4dr I depicted) and an A-class Sedan.
The rear does look a bit different as well.

I was ready to question the OP there but something seemed off, and he's right.

Can't believe any manufacturer would sign off such similar products, the bodies are different. I could understand them calling them Sedan/CLA if it was just a pure trim level thing, but not when the panels etc are different yet they look so similar

Bonkers.

No, they are different, albeit not by much! Been highlighted in a few threads on here, and although the M-B site has now changed because of the new A-Class models, you used to be able to see the differences quite clearly on there. The A-Class saloon was kinda hidden on the main model selection page, but it was squirrelled away in somewhere on their site and could be deeplinked.

I thought you'd know about the A5, I was umming and arring there. hehe

From the front they look pretty much the same I admit, but it's the rear that gets me, the A-Class just looks like it stops too short, like it's been rearended. whereas the CLA is a bit sleeker at the back.

The C does that as well, I quite like it, makes it look RWD. Even though the A isn't. Unless it is....

yes

The conversation went a bit like this:
  • (me to the CLA owner) Nice car!
  • Thx! You know, Y got a new one as well?
  • Really, what did he get?
  • A-class sedan
  • Me: confused.... isn't this, the CLA, an a-class sedan?
  • Him: -annoyed-... no, that's a different car!

hehe

its the follow BMW model and i hate it.

Make a saloon - Cost X
Make a coupe - Cost X+Y
Make frameless door variant of the saloon - Cost X+1/2Y
Make a 4 door version of the coupe - Cost X+2Y

3 series
4 Series
3 series gran turismo (ok its now a hatch)
4 series gran coupe

I cant for the life of me see why anybody would buy a 4 series Gran coupe over the 3 Saloon but evidently they are doing, same applies to gran turismo and the 3 series touring.

They are actually fairly different to be fair.

In person the A35 Saloon is actually very nicely proportioned.

Sorry but Im gonna have to disagree, I’ve seen it in the flesh and I think it looks as awkward and disproportioned as that picture. It reminds me of supermini saloons you get in developing countries Each to their own of course.

The price difference between the A saloon & the CLA is fairly substantial. Well, it could be, depending on what page of the MB UK website you look at. I've seen the CLA "from £34325", "from £31325" and "from £30325" in the last 2 minutes. Their website is a shambles. Anyhow, more expensive than the A saloon, which is more entry level than the CLA which pitches itself as a premium product. The CLA doesn't attract me at all, but I'm the wrong demograph for it.
