Hot rods originally were hotted up cars made to go faster. Looks played 2nd fiddle if at all. It was mostly about speed.

The Custom scene was more about making it look shiny, but not actually having the go faster ability. I guess street rods sort of mixed the two a bit. Sleek over pretty designs sometimes but with some go and well engineered.

To me many (but by no means all) rat roads seem to be making a style statement in the same way the customs used to. Only the style's changed to try and look ratty. Sadly many don't have the performance to back the looks up

I can respect anything that's been a work of love and/or engineered well. But sometimes they do seem a tad pointless and OTT.
