If anyone does a day trip to Tetbury you will spot dozens of cars/4x4s with all sorts of silver tat stuck on.

I'l try and get some pictures but there is a Jeep Cherokee with a silver camel on it, a Rover 75 with (I think) a alpaca, another 75 with a plane on it, a couple of cars with dogs.

Each an every one of them would be lethal if you ended up taking a dive over the bonnet but since these cars are driven by elderly chaps/ladies they are above the law.

Illegal or not, the thought of the damage it would do, even at low speed, to someone that accidentally walked in front of the car doesn't bear thinking about...
Exactly this. It would be cat-astrophic.
They'd definitely be feline a lot of pain, that's for sure.
Don't you mean "feline ocalot of pain"? biggrin

I think most Mascots like these now are designed to breakaway? They look stupid anyway!

Why? Back in the day when Jaguar used to fit them, they were on long curved bonnets with a chrome strip down the middle, so the mascot fitted in with the line of the bonnet. See the pic of the Mk VII / VIII someone posted above. Fitted to the flat bonnets Jags have now they just look silly.

I think I'd still be pretty upset to end up with some kiddy's guts all over my windscreen, even if it was their own fault that they got run over.

Gonna look at mine tonight. I think it's solid and I'll have to get a new bonnet. Arse!

All sorts of lovelies on this site:

http://www.memorablemascots.com/

I'm rather taken with the pigs with wings. 8 inches high. Apparently the wings light up !

I also see that they have a range of leapers for Jags, which are spring loaded to be safer.

To be honest, I don't have a problem with them. Can't see how they make it much less safe than being run over the school bus or something..

I think they made a law saying 4' from the leading edge. Mebbe they changed it?

A friends fathers car was sold with one of these and had no MOT issues, I think they're rather charming providing they're factory fitted and go well with the shape and image of the car. There's a horsey type woman who lives near me with a mascot like this on her freelander which just looks st!

I'm fairly sure that as long as they're factory fitted then they are okay from a legal point of view. You'd think that the leaping cat on some later Jaguars would be designed to break off if hit with a certain amount of force to reduce damage to a pedestrian?

Don't high level Rolls Royces still have the spirit of ecstasy that drops into the bonnet once the car starts to move?

Most of them look as if they have been stolen from an old lady's mantlepiece.

I remember now the chap who sold me the car said his deceased dad had a mascot put onto one of the jags he owned. Must be this one. The mascot is a fair way back on the bonnet so probably ticks that box but is solid as a rock. I guess this is therefore a mod from the insurance perspective and they'd take me up the arse if I informed them that I wanted it accounted for and so unless anyone knows different or some other way round the hole in the bonnet that would be there upon removal then it's new bonnet time.

Any ideas? Can I shove something else there that wouldn't look st?

They are totally at odds with the moves to make cars safer for pedestrians, like Bull Bars, ok, being hit by a car is never good but at 10/15 mph, going over a bonnet goes from potentially being injured to losing a big lump out of your person.

It isnt always the pedestrians fault, the kind of person that does this is, as has been alluded to, a bit of a horsey berk, usually of advanced years. I got reversed into once by a woman to fat to turn her head to look behind, minding my own n the pavement one minute checking out my new footy stickers and she reversed up the kerb and into me. It is usually kids that get knocked off bikes and pensioners that get knocked over, seems really rather selfish to attach what is actually an ornate metal spike to a car, we know better now than we did when they were originally fitted.

Was surprsied to see one on my bosses Jag in the States, but then, there nobody walks anywhere and crossing a road on foot is only for the destitute, mad or British visitor.

My R-R ( Spirit II) has a mascot that when hit disappears into the rad shell. The latest from Goodwood can be retracted when parked so that it cannot get nicked. For other models you can get what is termed a 'town cap' for the pre war models and ofor nime a lockable cover

Some snide garages who want to impress VOSA would fail the mot on it. Others wouldn't bat an eyelid!
There are far better ways to impress VOSA than to demonstrate ignorance of the MOT test to them.

Mascots don't come into the MOT test.

The mascot on this is the least of your worries if it hits you! No, it isn't sprung loaded and, yes, it would hurt! Get out of the way.
