My R-R ( Spirit II) has a mascot that when hit disappears into the rad shell. The latest from Goodwood can be retracted when parked so that it cannot get nicked. For other models you can get what is termed a 'town cap' for the pre war models and ofor nime a lockable cover
Ah, that must be what I'm thinking of thumbup

Illegal or not, the thought of the damage one of these would do, even at low speed, to someone that accidentally walked in front of the car doesn't bear thinking about...

The car manufacturer or the driver can't be blamed for the clumsiness of pedestrians. If it impales them, it impales them.
For some reason I read that part in the voice of Ivan Drago.. hehe

Would replacing it with a round badge look st or you think I can get away with it? I fear for the condition of the bonnet under the short oblong plinth under the cat and also the prospect of opening up a place for rusting. Any sensible tips on what you'd seal it up with to prevent water ingress and rust?

Jag stopped fitting them as they didn't pass the safety regs. You could still be prosecuted for fitting them under Construction and Use S.100 but probably won't.

The point though is while cars like the old Rolls' and Mk II Jags in particular had the mascot designed in, these retro-fit leapers look like bloody stupid ornaments on some old biddy's mantlepiece and just look sh*t.

My mother has a mascot on the bonnet of her car. There are specific rules on how far back on the bonnet you have to mount it (iirc it has to be 2/3rds or more of the bonnet length back from the leading edge of the bonnet). Oh, and you are likely to invalidate your anti corrosion warranty the moment you drill 2 holes through your bonnet.

Aha! I wonder if you sold it to my old man. He got rid of it a few years back, I think it went to Germany.
