"My research for this story started with the mental image of a Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 joining a deserted motorway somewhere, the most outrageous cloud of tyre smoke erupting from its rear wheels in a symbolic evocation of all that is incongruous and wonderful about this monster of a car."
As the whole first paragraph of your text circles around that picture I'd expect you
to come back to that idea in the last sentences and resolve the reader tension.
This article is useless without the pic! Okey the fangio bit kind off makes up for it...

I'm working on this! And it'll be POTW when I find it..."My research for this story started with the mental image of a Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 joining a deserted motorway somewhere, the most outrageous cloud of tyre smoke erupting from its rear wheels in a symbolic evocation of all that is incongruous and wonderful about this monster of a car."

Anyone got this lurking in a pile of old Car mags? Even Mel Nichols didn't have it in his collection!

The good investment - if you can find one. Is the 80's version of this big engine in a standard Merc saloon.
A Brabus w124 500e 6.5 litre - U can't touch this.. ohhhhh whoooo ohhhhh stop Hammertime

Yep, lovely car. One of last tank like built ones too before the accountants took over the company!
It has come to the attention of the management that some posters have been rating this article at less than 10. As such behaviour is entirely inappropriate for a true lover of the automobile, your future voting behaviour is being monitored for abhorrent tendencies...

What a fantastic way to make progress. Wonderful cars. Cliched, I know, but they are built like tanks. Our neighbours had one in the early 80's, a 350 rather than a 450, but still a W116. They had a head-on with an artic in France. Badly injured but survived. A lesser motor (of which most were) would likely have seen a very different result.
The W116 is indeed a tough old boot, as shown by these shots from 1970’s Germany. The Mk1 Capri was never a particularly solid car, but you would thought that it would have put up a bit more of a fight, rather than allowing itself to be used as an external crumple-zone by the Merc…Martin 480 Turbo said:
Brock Yates ?
That was my first thought too, and his comprehensive track test. But the most tyre smoke I can see visible is this shothttp://www.m-100.cc/6point9/brochure/brockyates/in...

How things move on though - there's more bhp in C Classes these days. Stupid, eh?!
That's 428 kilowatts or 582 hp (PS), so still a bit above all the C Classes (not sure about the Black coupe though). In any case, what a monster and what an engine bay.
I love these as they are so anonomous compared to the Mercs of today - without badging they could be mistaken for a basic 280S.
James Hunt had at least 2 6.9's. One was an earlier 1977 model in bright red with beige velour that was featured as a case history in C&S magazine in 1995. It looked well used then and was only £7995 so not sure if its still running now. The other one was photographed in his driveway on blocks as he was in financial difficulty when he died and was using an A35 to transport his budgie collection to shows (!). It is now happily back on the road.

The original owner has messed around with this too much. I hate it when they put those chrome trims on - they often hide and incubate rust. The interior has been horribly pimped up - original perforated leather or preferably the velours. Also where are the original Bundt alloys??
Owned one of these for a few months a couple of years ago. Ex Kuwait diplomatic car, dark green with a full tan leather retrim, everything had been covered - headlining, door cards, steering column shroud - pretty much every interior surface had been covered in lovely tan leather. Apparently it had been done by Aston Martin back in the 80s at considerable cost.
Was hilarious to drive, would waft around in total air-cushioned comfort then take off like a two ton dragster with a shove of the throttle. Unfortunately running costs were equally hilarious and I sold it before it bankrupted me. The head gasket went shortley after buying it and the gaskets ALONE were over 500 quid! Main dealer only. Did the work myself so saved the cost there - nice to work on, propely engineered.
Glad I owned it, wouldn't have another.
