It's a drag racing thing.

Quicker acceleration, faster top speed.

This trumps the new car on looks by a significant distance. eek

What kind of power did these have and how much are they going for today?

Very Very almost lorry

Custard Test

Both quicker and faster!
Quickest and Fastest mean something very different in motorsport. Quickest refers to peak/trap speeds and fastest is the time around the lap.

And the 962s and 956s were gorgeous smile

Nice car, and the liveries are all good stuff. Is it just me or for a car like this does the 203mph seem a bit low? These days 200 and a bit is 458/Gallardo territory. Is it because of all the electrickery hybrid stuff?

Its apparently 1490kg with batteries and electric motors. It would be rather interesting to know what its mass is without them.

With performance in the 458/MP4-12C region (except for those few minutes the batteries provide a boost) I can't see a £600k price making sense unless the run is quite limited.
The target weight for this car is "under 1800kg". The 1450kg figure is for the mp4-12c.

Here is a dodgy phone video of three spiders in the move. The first one looks like the martini car in this news piece:

Could be, though 1st car is running No 17 and 3rd No 10 as opposed to the 23 of this car

Lucky PHer,,,, lucky, lucky PHer,,,

Proper car vs Trinket
Its a no contest,

The old car Top Trumps all modern, boredom inducing super-cars.
The 20 year old is honest, effortlessly fast and rewarding.
The new car is not.
Its just another cynical "do it all", a soul-less fatty churned out of the same software package every other car builder ruins their designs with. (It should be called "Passionless Auto-Auto-2012")
Its dissapointing Porsche are embracing this dull tedium approach.

I have to say that I'm surrised no one picked up on my previous post comparing the 918 to the 904?

Easy when 'spoken in jest' posts are replied to by acerbic mind numbing morons with no sense of humour!! Back to the OP, looks lovely and being a design reminicent to the Porsche 904 looks suited to that livery.

904 was the first car I thought of when I saw the 'finished' 918. As said above, it does have shades of R8 at the rear 3/4 with the blade...and definate F430 influences at the front.

Neither of which are a bad thing. I think this could be my new favorite. Cant help but think that junking the batteries and cutting the price in half would be a good idea.

Should Porsche maybe offer the two options? A Petrol megga BHP and a Hybrid too?

Wonderfully executed engineers wet dream.

But the whole MPG is a distraction, due to ridiculous criteria that will 99.99% not be met in real life. Whats the point.

So putting aside the desire to chase artificial, and almost universally irrelevant bureaucratic milestones, I dont really see what this car offers in performance terms above, say, a GTR, besides an astronomical price tag. In fact, I could go further, and suggest that the use of heavy batteries actually decreases the purity of its design purpose.
Don't be silly.

Surely the whole design purpose is to produce a supercar that doesn't have a thirst like Oliver Reed on a bender.

Before dismissing the economy goals why not wait to see what they actually achieve.

i have rewritten my post 3 or 4 times to try and get across my feelings for that car, but i have deleted them all because words simply do not do it justice.

A slow clap of the hands and a wry shake of the head will have to suffice, words are inadequate. that is a definitive work of mechanical and visual art...........Bravo....

Dave,

Some info from Google on the Dauer 962:

In 1994 a change in rules at Le Mans prompted Jochen Dauer to enter a modified 962 into the event. The result was not only a GT1 win, but an overall Le Mans victory. In commemoration of the event, Jochen Dauer built several road going versions of the new variation on the 962 theme. And thus it was born, the fastest road car in the world.

The Dauer LeMans was presented at the international auto fair at IAA Frankfurt in 1993.

Some specifications:
Engine 6 cylinder bi-turbo Torque 700@5000 Nm@rpm Power 730 (537) HP (kW) 0-100 km/h 2,8 s 0-200 km/h 7,3 s Weight(empty) 1080 kg Tyres F:285/30 ZR18 R: 335/30 ZR18

Above is the Dauer 962 LeMans which they broke the 400 km/h barrier with. It has a sequential five speed gearbox and is rear wheel driven. The bodywork and chassis are Kevlar carbon fibre.
