BHP = top speed, but overtaking and fast road driving is about torque if the car is heavy, the 450hp is fine in a lightweight 430 as it needs less torque in the mid-range, put that power into a 4200 and the car is floundering unless you add 1000/1500 rpm to your change points.

This is why it is underwhelming, it's inappropriate for the car if driven in the UK, cool for Germany but nowhere else.

Real world driving... the 3200 with the cams sorted will easily power away from a 4200, thanks to that fat torque figure in its midrange.

A couple of points.

The 4200 engine is not a Ferrari 430 engine. It shares very few parts and has major differences such as cross plane vs. flat plane crank.

It's the M138 version of the engine in the 4200......whilst not absolutely identical it is broadly the same lump

M138 is the model designation of a 4200. F430 is a very different engine from the 4200. Not even the crankcase is the same.

We will have to agree to disagree.

FFS. Go on Eurospares and look for yourself. All the main parts are different.

Must admit, I like the idea of a turbo car, very easy to get power out of them.

Until I read the linked items, I wasnt that interested in the 42, but the DMS tune to 440+ bhp does sound great. Not a lot of torque though.

To me, the 32 looks better, but its older. Always a trade-off. I would so love to own either though. Beautiful cars.

Have to say I was told by a VERY well respected Maser / Ferrari specialist that the two engines are very similar indeed. He even showed me the pistons from each, and they are... the same!
The crank and induction are of course different, as are the cam drives, but much of the big stuff is the same.

I was told that it was actually the Ferrari 360 engine that was broadly the same as the 4200 engine? But then the 360 and 430 may be very similar, meaning this by default.

I personally thought it was more 360 based but happy to be corrected smile (In either case it goes well and sounds like god!)

The 360 engine is similar to the F355. Bigger bore and variable valve timing. Many parts are interchangeable on these.

Nice engine note on the 42. The CSL driver he was chasing didnt appear too concerned about getting close to apexes though...

I've just bought a 2000 Black 3200 GT... I'm still grinning. It's only done 45k and yes... there are a few things to be sorted, which were negotiated out of the purchase price.

Looking forward to tomorrow now biggrin
