If I had the space and the money I'd genuinely consider a trip down to Somerset to take a look at that example from the article. I think the 309's added rarity actually boosts its appeal over the 205 GTi (and I say that as a former 205 owner).
Too late, it's gone!

At this precise moment in time I don't have the money or the space. However, my girlfriend declared yesterday that she absolutely cannot drive the 924 which I'd bought to downsize to a single car. I'm quite gutted about that, but despite briefly contemplating the alternative I've decided that getting rid of the car is the lesser of two evils. So I might be on the hunt for a tolerably practical all-rounder before too long.

It's hard to say if that example on eBay has been as well looked after as the other one, but the mileage is pretty encouraging if you assume that clean 309s have the potential to go the same way as the 205.

I'm assuming the 309's running costs would be basically the same as the 205's?

I would have thought so unless any of the trim bits, panels are harder to get new

Only just caught up with this thread and wanted to say well done to Bob1179 for buying such a wonderful 309. I hope it's great fun and look forward to seeing you over in Readers' Cars soon!

That dash pic takes me back... Loved my phase 2, thought it was a better drive than the 205 1.9 gti I had prior.. Wife hated the 309 though so it had to go..

Gratuitous Dimma pic:

Nice.

First 'quick' car I ever owned - Loved it - Had an appropriately GTI numberplate E441MAD and never let me down except for the rear hatch shattering and falling in on my baby son when the seasls were deep frozen! Luckiloy he was wearing a wooly hat and was entirely unharmed - Very draughty drive home though!

Looks nice, shame it hasn't got all the options. Electrical problem shouldn't be too hard

I remember a company called Gutmann that did various styling options? I recall when the old man was a dealer, he sold a couple of them with some nice looking additions, not the Dimma style, just more subtle.
