Garlick, you are bang on the money about hire cars. Arrived in the USA on Friday hoping that Dollar Car Rental would have me hooning about in a Dodge Charger with red and 292hp to play with. Instead got a 2012 Ford Taurus (think poor man's LS400) and 800 miles later I don't want to give the keys back tomorrow. Hire cars get me every time!

Why not build something a bit different for your 10k budget Garlick?? This has worked out to approx 10k. I get it back this weekend with its completed pro interior conversion, sink, fridge, hob, sattelite TV etc etc....Plus it makes the right noises, has cruise, air con, elec windows, central locking

I'm feeling strangely drawn to a camper too, though my desires run to something with adequate headroom which means mighty big pricing. Love this - definitely in my lottery win garage!

Any idea how much that is? Looks very well designed for a Big Trip.

Now that looks very cool indeed. Are you running LPG too?

I'm guessing the seating folds to form a double bed?

best thing to do with the hyundai would be put in a skip
It is a skip. We had one in Corfu, complete with permanantly illuminated EML light. To quote James May, the gap between 2nd and 3rd is so large, you could fit an entire gearbox in there. Turning on the aircon reduces engine power by 90%. Not pleasant when you are negotiating an island with steep hills, hairpin bends and crazy locals. I would have parked it in the sea if it had been able to summon the requisite 25bhp to get there.

This time round, I located a hire car companies that rented VWs. 1 x Golf Mk5 & 1 x Golf Mk6. No more concerns about the ability of the hire car to make it up the drive from the villa.

God I hated that Hyundai. No more will I fall for the standard hire car lie of "or equivelent"!

Sometimes it's fun to get back to basics.

My non petrolhead sister recently purchased an i10 as a run around after her Ka got written off.

I may or may not have had a bit of a go in it and greatly enjoyed ragging it like a go-kart. (At her insistence I might add!)

Nope. why would you? I get late teens around town and Mid 20's on a run. You will only get late 20's early 30's on a 6 cyl caravelle...I can buy a lot of petrol for the £25k saving on a caravelle??

lets say I do £6k per year...Fuel savings wouldbe minimal, not to mention loss of space.

LPG doesn't really stack for toys...just commuter vehicles.
