This ridiculous 'cool' survey is the product of a small company who conduct an entirely unscientific 'study' (asking people on the street one afternoon probably - their methods are never questiuoned) and then try and sell their results to desperate PR / marketing departments.

Pay up £12k and any company would be listed into the top 20.

Once they have made a few quid they punt out their final list to lazy journalists as an easy space-filler / psuedo news story.

It's really not worth discussing.
I don't agree with all you say, the methods used to conduct the survey are very clearly explained so probably don't need to be questioned. Whether you agree with the methods is something else, personally, whilst I know nothing of some of the people asked for their opinion I would hold no credit to the opinion of people know as Plan B or Rizzle Kicks. That doesn't affect the survey as presented, however.

What evidence do you have that any company can get into the top 20 for £12k? I would be really interested to know how as it could be £12k well invested!!

Journalists have been reporting it for 11 years so maybe that is the problem. If they stopped, it wouldn't be carried out.

They approached me!

I would question the benefit of investing as I don't think anybody believes these stories any more. Do you?

You have a point but how many people really actually take it seriously, I mean properly serious...? I've read the survey in the past out of curiosity but it's just a throw away survey. Minutes later my mind was somewhere else. I'd be surprised if many people are aware of the survey, it's more important to the industries represented. Hypothetically, if I was about to buy a Merc and saw that Aston Martin were higher in the 'cool list', I'm not gonna be changing my decision. Generally people buy what they want regardless of whats surveys say.

My #1 would be Breitling
Breitling are not cool, they are producers of overpriced crap.

Having said that, I guess that is what's considered 'cool' these days; gone are the days of understated quality being 'cool'. Next time, if indeed ever, you consider purchasing a Breitling then take a swift left turn and look at the Patek Philippe range.
Had a look at Patek Philippes and I find them either too blingy, too fat or just don't like the faces. Not to mention they're silly money and only worth about 1/20th of what they cost. (IMO)

There's only a couple of Breitlings I really like, Aerospace with either titanium grey or silver case, gold highlights. Blue dial with gold highlights.

Chronomats are nice too:-

Others are either too big or too blingy.

If they're having to reduce new prices that's good news for me, the used prices will also fall smile
Take a look at the PP Golden Ellipse or Calatrava with mechanical movement. They're not blingy, they're not fat and there's nothing to dislike about the faces - they are lovely, and the insides are a thing of beauty.

Are you saying they approached you to pay £12k to be in the top 20 or to give your opinion of the coolest brands?

I am not saying that people necessarily believe it, but to be in the top 20 for £12k could be seen to be a bargain given the amount of publicity the survey has generated.

Well if its cool they rate why aren't Technics up there? Everybody who thinks they're cool has a set. Virtual DJ too!

The Nike Air Force One is a popular 'hip hop' shoe, as well as amongst hipsters with the high tops so I guess they make up the cool over white on white air max 90's. I see alot of AF1 hi-tops around.

IMO one of the coolest brands is Rizla, its either marijuana/cigarettes and motorbikes all rolled up in one cool brand! Its edgy and thats surely cool.

Oh, do read the thread, it's already been explained. rolleyes

For those who say Apple isn't cool are clearly deluded.
How many brands have people queuing for days and camping out to be one of the first to own a new product release.
How many brands can cause the hype they do.

As to the comment about IOS6, that's geeky st and therefore is very uncool giving a st about functionality

They are a lifestyle company that make things people want to own, not need to own.

I'd say queuing for days outside a shop to buy a PHONE is desperate and deluded, not cool.

They cause hype because their near-religious followers are blindly uncritical and respond to idiots in blue T-shirts telling them to get excited.

A phone cannot be cool. Nothing a phone is or does is cool. Fighter jets, mountain bikes, 200mph supercars, exclusive design-icon GTs, motorbikes, some watches, some clothes, SLR cameras, shoes if you're female, designer furniture - these are examples of cool objects, defined really by their propensity to make people go 'Ooh!' or 'Phwoar!' when they see them. Phones, computers, TVs, ereaders - no matter how well they're designed they can only ever be adequate or acceptable. People who get excited about them have something wrong upstairs.

Well thank you for defining cool and telling everyone how to think. Twincam is incharge. Hail to Twincam's greater wisdom.
