Can someone work out an inflation adjusted price for the original 1.6 205 GTI, and an inflation adjusted price for a 205 1FM (nearest I can think of as being an equivalent special edition).

Might help put current list prices into perspective.

I like the 208 but it's not 20 grands worth. More like 15.
Why?
Well the 208 three door range starts at £9995. Admittedly there's more kit on the GTI but I doubt it costs Peugeot more than a couple of thousand, if that. A turbo, bigger wheels and a slightly nicer interior shouldn't double the price.

Make it £15,000 with solid paint and no gadgets and they'll sell loads.

It's also 2K more than the already highly priced Mini Cooper S.
A highly priced Mini Cooper S? Which will need to be specced up like almost any car.
The Clio RS200 Cup, which can be had stripped is around 17-18k.
So pulling figures out if the air doesn't make it right. We all want of pay as little as possible and no one pays the list price but there is a business behind the product and profit is part of it. They're not going to give it away.

I know they are not exactly like for like, but I'm not too sure:

PEUGEOT 208 GTI LIMITED EDITION
£20,495

Suzuki Swift Sport
£13,499
I know Peugeot are looking to make money but in reality it's a small car and they're not a premium brand, whatever that means these days.

IIRC, the 205 1.9GTI was just over £12k when the Civic VTI and Golf GTi 16V were nearer £16k in 1992.

Using:

£12,000 from 1992 in today's money comes in at 20,280

So inflation adjusted it's about the same, though cars have generally been dropping in price.

I think I'd rather have a Caterham and Dacia Duster (or Sandero) for that kind of money. Probably a financially sounder way of spending it too.

Most car buying decisions are not financially sound decisions... I for one wouldn't be on here if I operated that way. Sometimes I've wished I was a car is a means to an end, Skoda, Korean, budget end of the market guy... Oh the money I would've saved... But, oh the fun and enjoyment I've had too. No budgets yet then wink

My current daily was chosen after my previous one disappeared in the night while we slept. Open the blinds in the morning, no car. Went down stairs, drawer where they keys were was half way out and front door wide open.
Popped into Audi, no intention of buying... Just a test drive. Offered a great deal on a pre-reg TTS and it was on my drive a week later. No plan, no spreadsheet. My honey summed it up. You only have one life, if you can afford it, have it. I've never been good at sensible.

I didn't say I was sensible: The money saved goes on race entry fees.

Thanks! Had a rummage through the paperwork for my F-reg 1.6 one (1989) and found the original invoice for £9495.

I'm amazed at the number of people on this thread who've clearly driven this car, especially given that none of the mags have even been given demonstrators yet.

Talk about living off past glories!

Still I don't think it actually looks that bad. WOuld never buy one mind... ropey build quality and poor depreciation have killed any desire for another Pug!

I'm amazed that 11,000 people have ordered one despite never having seen one.

Possibly because the power on offer coupled with a car that's markedly lighter than the one it replaces, from a company well aware of its need to get back to its roots with a car that handles well, which is also returning to rallying with a Group A version called the R5 that'll be released at the Paris motor show makes it all rather appealing.

I can't understand the general hatred for Peugeot on this site. Sure, they've done some clunkers in the recent past, but the RCZ, 508 and 208 have been generally quite well received.

In 1987 a 205 GTI 1.6 would have been £6295, which in today's money is £14,982.10

In 1992 the 1.9 205 GTI 1FM was £17,000 (which incl a £5k donation to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre) so it would be £28,730.00 in today's money (£20,280.00 excl the 'donation')
