The other way around you mean.
I am sorry that you think the comment is daft. But I do struggle to see what a Golf offers over a Polo. Assuming you are in the market for a VW which takes 4/5 people and a reasonable amount of luggage, the Polo seems like a good bet. I admit to not being an afficiando, but I have mistaken a Polo for a Golf a couple of times recently, so I think they do look alike to the casual observer. The Polo seems to have grown to the size the Golf used to be, too. I am sure you will point out that the Golf comes with bigger engines and the like, but presumably the Polo weighs less so should cope with a smaller powerplant?
In any event, I am surprised anybody takes any notice of my ramblings. And based on your post, I am not sure whether it is better to run off a sentence that attempts to encapsulate in a few words what I think (and risk being castigated for my trite opinions), or write out a little essay justifying my thought processes (and bore the t*ts off everyone).
I understand your viewpoint but it doesn't just apply to VW. Look at the current Ford Fiesta vs the Focus, the fiesta also achieves the goals that you laid out for the polo.I am sorry that you think the comment is daft. The problem is that with each new generation customers expect the new car to be more spacious, offer more luxuries and better safety thus the car grows a bit. In an ideal world manufactures would simply tell people to get their cash out and buy the next model up not criticise the Polo for being to small when they ought to buy a Golf!
In reality though VW make the polo, golf, passat a bit bigger but this means there is now a void at the bottom of the scale so the new UP was brought in when surely the UP ought to be a polo and the Golf the size of the polo..
Then VW could have a Golf GTI with 200+hp in a 1100Kg package which is suitable for 4 adults, has a usable boot space, fits into an average garage/parking space and do what a hot hatch is meant to do!

Awww you like the bug.
To be fair I agree t he new new Beetle looks like it should have more universal appeal and is slightly less likely to be branded a girls car.
Having been following some of the Paris Motorshow coverage on VW Vortex, I spotted this picture. Now to me, any manufacturer that can turn up at a show with this selection of cars cannot be accused of being boring.
It's not that exactly. Although I do admit I'm not very keen on the image Golfs and most Audi's portray and I hate the fact they are marketed along these same smug ideals. To be fair I agree t he new new Beetle looks like it should have more universal appeal and is slightly less likely to be branded a girls car.

And I do admit I need to drive a more modern VAG as its been a while. But road tests and reports on PH do still seem to suggest most of them are rather inert sterile experiences. Isolating the driver and distancing them from the road. Is this still true? And do they still kill the throttle if you so much as think of heal and toeing or left foot brake? That kind of think would truly piss me off and I couldn't live with a car that interfered in such ways.
Really don't like most of their dull send you to sleep account black or grey interiors either. Much prefer something. With some flare.

Not subtle enough for a VW, IMO. I prefered Wolfburg's styling when it was mainly form follows function.
Looking at this, just a few immediate points: why those fake front ducts channeling air to a set of driving lights? How stupid is that? The childish red stripe that highlights how much of these lamps actually does not need to be transparent. The rear light clusters that extend to the boot lid for no reason. And the general agressive cues they put in. Kitsch.

Ah! more of the same.
I loved my edition 30 but I think the record needs changing...
edition 25, 30, 35... I wonder what the next one will be???? The edition 35 was a flop because it was not different enough to the standard GTI.
Yes the new Golf looks better than the last one, but the MkV looked even better and was most importantly very different to the Mk4. I was told the new Golf would be more "Scirocco-like"... and it is... but not enough to make it anything special.

This looks like a backward step styling wise. Not so much extra power either. For about 300 quid you can re-map the ECU in the standard 2litre turbo of the existing engine to give about 25% more grunt (it basically ups the boost from about 10psi to about 17.5psi - not sure what that does to engine longevity or real world drivability though.....).
My point being shouldn't VW with all their resources be able to do better?
