Definitely do it. Besides the emotive aspect, values are only going one way. Shame it's not a 325i but it's still one of the prettiest "saloon-->convertibles" (as opposed to purpose-build sportsters) around, in my humble one. I will supply this as evidence to support my point.

Was that the kind of sense check you were after?

Yep. And when you've got the car back to 100%, you could sell it, to my son maybe?, at a loss.

Grubes - listen to your Uncle G, ex-cars are like ex-girlfriends: they're an ex for a reason.

Keep the memories fond and move on.

Ah, so I see Renault are keen to bastardise the entire hot hatch legacy they have....

Interesting!! 2-1 against. Not what I was expecting.

Some good points though...

I generally agree with the "don't go back" motto. I sold it after breaking up with the then girlfriend and chopped it (the e30, not the girl) in for an e36 328i coupe in a moment of knee-jerk retail therapy.

There you go: you moved to a better car and a better woman. Keep moving forward!

Having just spoken to the seller, it seems the old girl is worth saving. Lots of money spent on an engine rebuild a few years ago, no bangs or clunks, roof still in good condition, interior looks ok, it runs ok, has 8 months MOT etc etc. What's the worst that could happen...

But do I really want / need a small engined pram? With a house move coming up, do I really want a "project"?

Quick text request to Mrs G for "go ahead" came back with, basically, "up to you, but fine by me".

Hmmmm....
Yes. Buy it. For short journeys it'll be more fun than the Benz while not wasting the M5. It'll be perfect to scoot around London in and everyone should have a convertable for days when the sun is shining and the world isn't such a gloomy place.

I can think of no meaningful reason why not.

I can't speak for ex-cars, but this analogy seems like it would be surprisingly accurate.

However, if it really holds true you won't listen, despite knowing it'll never quite be what you want ti to be.

Good luck.

I know this isn't a 328i, therefore it isn't worth posting but I think a tidy E36 is a good thing and at least it has the 'better' 4 pot lump under the bonnet.

Does Mrs G know about the car's link to an ex-girlfriend? You know what people's imaginations can be like... ("Well if you want the car back...")

If the car lives outside in London it will be an invitation to have a knife put through the roof at some point.

Mrs G is far too sensible for that sort of twaddle.

And it would live either underground or in a garage.
