Great that such a car still exists biggrin

I assume he's priced it as a "if someone wants to give me that for it, then great, if not then I don't mind keeping it".

I, too, wouldn't actually know what to do with that if I owned it. Fear of putting higher mileage on versus just using it biggrin

Does this invalidate the cars homologation or were Ford allowed to count prototype and/or pre-production cars towards the requirement for 500 road cars? Could this mean that at least some of the RS500's race and series victorys are technically invalid due to not meeting homologation requirements?

Not that it bothers me (particularly this far down the line), it wouldn't be the first or last car to achieve homologation by dubious means, and it would be far from the worst offender but it's kind of interesting anyway... :-)
I'm sure I recall stories of inspectors being shown 250 cars for holomogation in the morning and then whilst they had a long lunch, the cars were moved to the second location, where the inspector could check the second batch of 250. Probably apocryphal, but I think many limited runs ended up rather more limited than reported..
I also heard this story, and when told to me the car in question was the Lancia Stratos.

Unbelievable, nobody will pay that, as has been demonstrated by the time it's been up for sale. I also agree that nobody has offered anywhere near even £62k for it, because a) if somebody was really that desperate to buy it for that kind of money they would have found the extra £3k and b) if the seller was really looking to sell it then they would have moved on the price by a similar amount.

I think it's up for sale for a reason other than it actually being up for sale...if that makes sense??

It's an interesting debate, I would love a proper air cooled 911 but at £15-20k for about the cheapest 964 (non-targa or convertible) I could have a very nice M3 that would be quicker, more refined, more reliable etc etc. Even my current car (Honda Integra Type R DC2) was expensive for what it is, I could have had a modern hot hatch with just as much power and at half the age & mileage for that money.

Nice cars these, but all old Fords seem to be commanding stupid prices these days. Even a cooking spec 1.3 mk2 Escort is well into 4 figures.

I really don't "get" it!

Guy I used to work with bought a tidy RS500 back in the early 00s - it was a low-mileage and largely unmolested example and I was puzzled why he'd bought the RS500 which is generally seen as being the inferior roadcar (big turbo BIG lag).

He loved it tho - and when he moved it on (for a tidy profit) the next owner put it into the Fast Ford mags, such was it's originality.

He never stopped reminding me he'd made a (small but still a ) profit on that car - thing is tho, by my "not even remotely man" maths, it's more than doubled in value since he sold it!! smile

Whether someone thinks a car like this is worth that amount is not the point...rather it's a case of who sees the value in it. Enthusiasts that I know are not forking out for extravagantly priced examples, but speculators are.
Values do not keep going up for ever, and the higher they go the harder they'll fall.

Long term it is only enthusiasts who are prepared to spend the necessary upkeep to maintain old vehicles.
I don't want to be a harbinger of doom but this silly season hasn't got long to run.

I offered someone £19k for a black 500 back in 1990 so £30k for a good one today isn't a huge increase, the guy turned £19k down so I bought a standard 3 door I kept for 13 years. On the original 204 bhp and 205 tyres I wouldn't exactly call them drivers cars, and the laggier 500 was hard work. 20+ years ago the attraction was the extra power it was easy to get from the engine. It was nice to have owned one but a good 944 turbo would run rings round it.

Great car, the 500s have massive tuning potential that can be exploited.
The engines have the larger and leggier T4 turbo over the standard T34 (I think) the much larger inter cooler, 8 injectors but only 4 are wired in for road cars unless they are modified, stronger block.

These made a reliable 550bhp in race trim back in 1987, with 600bhp reachable as well.
For years the cosworth tuning world revolved around the T4, 8 greys and the big inter cooler.
52 are in moonstone blue, 52 are in white and 396 are in black.

Was behind a moonstone blue on the motorway a few weeks ago. Lovely car with a lovely noise to go with it, this one was tuned.

I have a buying guide in a fast ford mag from a few years ago with prices starting at 10k for a rough example, 14-16k for a decent and 20k for the best. How times and values change.

A neighbour of mine had a genuine '500' from new, before ploughing it into some taxi's after a skin-full (allegedly)
A mate had an original 3dr cossie too.

To be honest, it's not aged that well. The interior (bar the recaro seats) is pretty standard Sierra fodder and far from lovely. The rear hasn't survived the years too well either.

I'm not saying it's not a great RS collectors car but it doesn't feel special in the same way something from Italy would. Unlike something like a Renault 5 Turbo 2 or Metro 6R4, it basic package isn't different enough from the base model car to justify stellar prices. IMO.

62k turned down?

Why do people write this fiction when the asking price is at this level? That is the sort of thing you see when it is a cheap heap. Normally it is an idiot selling something who is trying to appeal to an even bigger idiot who may want to buy it. I'm amazed we were spared that it is 'a real head-turner'...

People who genuinely have £62k to spend on a car like this (if you go along with it) are going to be able to spend £65k on such a 'rare' opportunity. They are not idiots. Stating how much you want/need for car is best done when you have someone interested. Not in print in the advert.

People do pay 'daft' money for things, but if you want £65k for it why not price it at a nice 'round' figure of say £75k and accept an 'offer'. Or try it at £100k and go for gold.

When you are trying to sell something, especially for £65k, don't insult people.

I was thinking of offering £61k for it, but obviously that is not going to clinch the deal.
