My 182 was an amazing car and every other renaultsport I have been in has been impressive (although i'd argue not as impressive as the 182 but i'm biased) so I guess it is right to think that the lastest will again impress. However, all the talk is certainly of a softer less focused car and this does worry me.
If renaultsport are made to produce a softer more saleable car (I can't believe they are doing it willingly) then I hope they are allowed to do a limited run hardcore cup car that meets what the original enthusiasts found so tantalising.

So, we have confirmation from the horse's mouth. The new RS clio is heavier than the current RS Clio. And the Current RS Clio was 100kg heavier than the phase 2 Clio 172 cup.
Effectively, they have brought out an over-weight, automatic five-door shopping trolley, that behaves like a TDi.
Why not just buy the TDi version of the new clio, get the 100kg weight saving that they claim it has over the current standard model, and save your self some money on insurance and petrol costs.
Goodbye decent RS clio, we can say 'We knew you when..........'

This says it all to me. They're sacrificing the raw essence of the previous Clio RS's so as to appeal to a wider range of customers, selling more cars and making more profit. It's all good news if you're a Renault shareholder but bad if you're a die-hard petrolhead.Still, I wouldn't write the new model off completely, not least until someone has revved the nuts off the thing IRL.

Not that I wish to be the prat who goes on about reliability of French cars (for the record the two I owned were very reliable so I can't say that was my experience of them!) but does anyone know more about the DSG style box they've developed for this? Is it in house? Is it going to be shared with any other manufacturers? I can't help but be concerned that if this is an all new box making it's debut in the Clio, I wouldn't want to be one of the first adopters!

Pretty sure it's been used in various Renault models for some time now. ‘It's a similar story with the switch to a dual-clutch paddleshift gearbox but, according to Barton, it's more involving too.’
Unless I have missed something, how is a flappy paddle gearbox ‘more involving’ than a manual??

I'd always prefer a manual, but there are a still some manufacturers who make them.
Most listed have Turbos.
All this stuff (Possility that the next GT3 is only DCT, fake noise M5 ect) and "Progress" like small capacity turbo engines, endless electronics and DCT boxes just makes me glad modern (ish) cars are so reliable.
I'll have something light, high reving and N/A with sod all electonics please....if its old and not as posh looking as the one the neighbours have so be it. Let them have their generic euro boxes, we can always buy used

Renaultsport has made the best of what the rules allow really. They HAD to do something about emissions. It's surely going to be the best of the new breed, and will no doubt handle fantastically

Disgusting is a strong word and I know looks can be a subjective thing but can you really say this looks good from any angle?
Why is an RS trying to appeal to school run mums and sales reps, surely that is what the standard Clio is for? Why do all manufacturers do this, in chasing this apparent holy grail of a "wider audience" they seem to totally forget what made the original car so good in the first place. We have seen this time and time again, it's what happens when you let the Accounting and Marketing departments have too much say in a cars development.
