As the title, I was looking to scratch my itch for a budget V8 & purchased a Lexus LS400-1995. The car is in really good condition in fact it's pretty mint & drives perfect but I just don't like the size/shape. Is there anything else for similar cost? It would also need to be resonably reliable.

Thanks, just had a quick look at the classifieds & a 740i could be an option.

If the size is an issue, how about a more compact Lexus. Ok its not a V8 but I can recommend the IS300. Bullet proof, more modern looks, better handling, less fuel.

Or if it has to be a V8 then a Monaro would be my choice. Not sure that cheap would come into it though!!

I do like the way the Lexus is put together, everything still works inc the AC. Back to the search & ill maybe have a drive in a LS300.

e39 540 gets my vote (e34 if you are on a budget and brave!). The e38 still looks good though...

I agree on the 540i. If you could find a nice E39 they are great, but for me, the winner would be a mint E34. Getting rare now, but worth searching out. Sadly, they just don't make 'em like that any more! smile

Good looking budget v8 thats cheaper than an ls eh?
Sounds like an xj8 to me,take your pick for a bag,i had a 3.2 sport which was great but think id go for a 4.0 with more toys n wood if getting another.

I missed out on a manual e34 540 Touring 18 months ago - I just wasn't brave enough frown

Had a go in a manual 540 E34 a few years ago. The (then) unfashionable white and cloth put me off in then end. Epic thing though.

Man up! hehe What a car, especially when de-chromed in a nice colour with sports seats. cloud9
As for the Jaguar XJ, yes I've had my share of those too, totally different but also a great car. XJ8 was good for wafting, but the XJR was just fabulous. yes

An ALPINA B10 V8 is the E39 you want.

I know, I know. I think it would have been costly though! Always fancied an e34, they just look... right! Bit long in the tooth for a daily now. Currently tempted by a e39 530, not fussed if manual or auto. Maybe a 540 if the right one comes along smile

I like the look of the XJ, How reliable are they? And what's the best version to have?

Id go Jag, German v8's are too refined. Then track down some sports cans.

Reliability is as any other aging barge, buy on condition and history but the big thing is that the chocolate timing gear has been changed.
Best one is subjective, sports look younger with less chrome n wood so a rarish 4.0 sport with some nice options would be popular.
I like wood n chrome so a 4.0 exec for me in navy with cream hide.

Looking back, I also have very fond memories of my W140 S500 Mercedes. It was built like a bank vault, but over a decade on, you might need some brave pills with it! Get lucky with a good one though and they are an incredible piece of kit. Superior in many ways to the model that replaced it.

X308 Jags:

- Rust leading to MOT failure and scrapping it
- Timing chain tensioners
- Rust leading to MOT failure and scrapping it
- Coil packs
- Rust leading to MOT failure and scrapping it
- Throttle body failure
- Rust leading to MOT failure and scrapping it
- Water pumps, electric heater pumps
- Rust leading to MOT failure and scrapping it
- Worn suspension
- Performance of 3.2 isn't great for the amount of fuel it uses, 4.0 uses same fuel but has more go
- Rust leading to MOT failure and scrapping it
- Terminal failure of the ZF gearbox, often at 80-100k, leading to scrapping it
- Rust leading to MOT failure and scrapping it

Seriously, they're nice cars, but have far more common issues which send them to the crusher than a Lexus of the same era so be careful.
