Why do car manafactuers put the topspeed on the speedo totally at a point where the car has no chance in hell of reaching..?

For example my 1.8 Laguna probably 120mph flat out.dont even think the 3.0 would any where near that.sorry I'm bored ..

It's so your children can tell other children how fast their Dad's car goes.

Didn't old XR3i speedo's go up to 140, pretty optimistic for 105hp or whatever they were.

Mine reads to 190mph. Car is 'geared' to 193mph, electronically limited to 155mph but will do about 165mph in 5th with a theoretical top speed of about 172mph. Not really that optimistic.

The original Cooper S, with the same drag factor as St Pauls Cathedral, had a 130mph speedo. At 100 any Mini was going to hit a wall of drag and need an enormous amount of power to exceed it.

Mine has 140 on the clock amd have heard of several people achieving this.

Ive had mine to 120 and wouldn't feel safe going any quicker in such a light car.

Even more optimistic, most of the Mk3 Escort models had the same speedo, meaning my Dads beige 1.3L 3 door (in beige - the paint code said 'Dove Grey'!) was at least 45mph shy of the end of the speedo on a good day. He got 70 out of it in 3rd once though, which felt more like 200mph to my 10 year old self, such was the wind noise and racket coming from under the bonnet.

Company Pajero import, has had the kmh speedo converted to mph, goes to 180mph! I reckon it'll struggle to do 100mph!

Simple answer of aesthetics and economics. How many cars within one range have an identical top speed and just imagine how crap you'd feel if your diesel what not had a 115mph clock fitted?

Manufacturer's standardisation across several models?

Doesn't matter anyway as the top speed will be illegal (yawn) and the indicated speed is always an over reading.

When we were kids we always argued 'whats the top speed on your dads car speedo'?. Whoever's had the highest number was assumed to be the fastest car, simple as that!

I've had mine up to an indicated 110 (Tops out at that)and it felt ok. Cant remember what my clock goes up to I guess its the same as your GTI, so very optimistic indeed. smile
