Just read this.

`I've never bought a car unseen and on ebay... I've just insured it (surprisingly cheaply) and I go and pick it up tomorrow.`

Do you want to alter that sentence in any way son.

Sorry to bump the thread again but the problem has been found. The turbo seems to have expired... there's a little play in the shaft but when it moves it catches the housing and sticks.

Second problem is we have a bit of a rattle that is possibly big end bearings.

Now the car ended up costing me a bit less than £590 due to an error in ad over the tax, so I'm thinking get a 2nd hand engine and turbo, which it seems I can pick up for less than £300 from a quick scour of ebay, sell off ancillaries I don't need to make some money back, stick a timing belt on the engine while it's out and I could still have a nice T5 for less than a grand? I can do the engine swap between friends for a few beers that's not a problem!

Or whack a turbo on and see low long the bottom end lasts? laugh

One thing is for sure I'm not breaking it for spares! This car still has many miles left in it, even if the engine is feeling a little worn out! Or maybe I'm just completely stupid and the 5 cylinder turbo bug and dreams of mid 90's touring cars are going to my head... biggrin
Can you describe the "bottom end" noise in more detail - They have a common problem where the oil strainer o-ring rots - worth checking as piss to fix. Try an oil change too - some of them can suffer from sticking piston rings causing piston slap - decent oil can help free them off. A decent cleansing oil may prolong the life - I'd recommend Shell Helix

I wouldn't run a 19t on that car, go for the 16t, it will still give wwwaaayyyy more power than you need.

for the sum of £590.

Am I in for a massive world of financial pain and ruin,
Anyone?
Look, if you end up scrapping it you've basically just spent 440 pounds on having an absolute giggle and a couple of decent stories. Not really going to force you to downsize your house is it wink

Nice one smile

Shouldn't be too much of a risk, they're good old tanks.

I bought an 855 T5 from ebay a couple of years back for £550, and sold a year or so later for £600 smile Had done ~260k, but had FVSH, and I did any of the non service stuff when I first got it (PCV system, plug leads, rotor arm & cap). Never let me down, well apart from the time one of the HT leads broke down, ironically when I was on the way to courier depot to pick a set up!!

Followed it up with a lovely 855R, which I still regret selling, but I made a decent profit on it, and also having two back to back I felt the need to move on.

Great cars though - enjoy smile

I have a V70 T but sadly it isn't a T5....I've suddenly got the feeling I want to see 250k miles on mine as it has just passed 182k miles.

OP, l bet if the old girl keeps running without too much cost you might feel compelled to keep it for a while! Cars like this do tend to shock people who sell them at 40-50k miles as they are getting old...you've got a top buy IMO biggrin
