Wasn't there an AMG version of the original A Class also? Hopefully this one will be more interesting. Certainly looks it
Yes but they only built two of them, as far as I know. They did have two engines each, though. I always found it amusing that after the lashing BMW got for their flame surfacing Mercedes started dicking around with their designs and nothing... Great cars though they are Mercs have always left me cold and their current range for me is no better. Except this A45, I'd never buy one but it intrigued me. And it has some surfacing going on too!

I think the weird surfacing effects have become accepted from all manufacturers, although I still intensely dislike them I appreciate that they're probably necessary with how bloated modern cars have become. The problem with the 1-series isn't the surface treatment so much as, well, everything else really. It's just an astonishingly ugly car. Very interested in this car, 90% likely to buy one, never owned a Merc.
Extremely glad to hear the AMG have put proper suspension on it and not gone for the old man with hemorrhoids cosseting ride.
I need to get on the list damn it, off to my local Merc dealer at the weekend i guess

If it beats the m135 it should sell like hotcakes assuming a approx £30k price.
ps why were you not allowed to drive the a45 ?
It won't be £30k. Auto Express have already revealed that it will be around £40K. In my mind that makes the M135i even more appealing. Plus it has a 6 pot engine and RWD!ps why were you not allowed to drive the a45 ?

Why is it sad?
I say sad but don't per say mean bad. It's just that, to most of us, cars of this origin were historically quite bad in most departments and laterly, they are producing cars which can be seriously considered better looking than some of the more accepted prestigious makes. Not exactly progress from the more recognised brands then in the looks department. IMHO of course.

On the Merc front, I find the current E Class particularly odd to my eye, especially the coupe.

All the talk of 'it doesn't look different enough' is making me laugh
Audi S-line TDi much different than S6, no
Does a C220 with AMG Sport kit look much different than a C63 ?
What do we want wide arches & a huge wing ? Lets leave that to the Barry Boys
99% of normal people wouldn't know a B8 RS4 from an S line, only a car nerd would spot the creased arches and fake coffee can exhaust ports Audi S-line TDi much different than S6, no

hell the only way i can spot M cars is the holes in the wings or Quasimodo's hump on the bonnet
Surely motor manufacturers don't bother with surveys since Ford's massive surveying of customers led to them making the Mk5 Escort - a car entirely based on their huge efforts to engage with customers and worse than it's predecessor in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY.
Top of that survey was - IIRC - "The car should start within 1.5 seconds of turning the key". Yes, you guessed it, people wanted their car to WORK.
Presumably, replies also included "the seat should be comfier than my sofa" (but not necessarily bolted-in - the early Orion's I drove wasn't!) and "as a mother I'd like the driver's seat to face backwards so I can check my children without neck strain - I can easily glance at the road as often as I normally do in a mirror"
Customers NEVER know what they want and should NEVER be asked about it. A successful product is one the manufacturer convinces people IS what they want - by insinuating every aspect of it's form and function as if the customer already wanted that anyway.
So much so that the cosmetics industry's chemists are often tasked with producing things invented by marketing people - such as "can we put more moisture into our moisturiser - we're thinking "Hydralising"" and so on.
So AMG talking about what a customer 'will put up with' here is really just using Monkey to pre-empt any comments like "the low-speed ride is only useful for releasing the pent-up frustrations in 17-year-old boys - but the seat fabric is easily washable so that's ok".
