Forgot to say that I towed my Caterham to the Ring behind that Scoob.

I took the Caterham round the ring, then second day as it was raining very hard I took the Scoobs. By the third or forth corner (maybe only half way around the GP circuit) I'd warped the discs. Made for an interesting lap.

Those standard discs were utterly crap, weren't they.

Curious but why an RB5, they are just a Turbo 2000 with some clever marketing aren't they.

Apart from the P1 the RB5 was the only UK car based on an STi shell and chassis, the RB used a Version 5 fixed shell with rear seats that wouldn't fold and therefore made the car more rigid. Also the RB5 came in steel blue which was an import only colour. It didn't have as much input from prodrive as the P1 with regards to suspension and ran a Turbo 2000 engine. The main reason the RB5 was so special was because it celebrated the late Richard Burns winning the WRC.

Agree with everything said, absolutely love Subaru rally cars they do sound fantastic in all guises.
Some of the footage around hairpins is so awe inspiring, smooth and balletic in nature I loved the thread.

But at the risk of a barrage of old subaru's are best....

I quite like my modernish 'hatchback' 330s and the sound. Mainly for all weather ease of pacy motoring.
Pictures in South of France heading to Route Napoleon.lick
And home winter conditions in Scotland.

The new hatch is actually growing on me but why oh why Subaru insist on spoiling all there cars with stupid light clusters is beyond me. They did it with the bugeye Scoob and they've done it several times with other models by using those awful "Lexus" rear lights that make it look soo chav inlcuding the new hatch. It doesn't need those "embelishments" and I wish they'd just stop.

As for the rally footage it is amazing and sums up in 5 minutes all that is wrong with modern WRC. Lovely looking cars rather than the crap we have now, lovely engines rather than the crap underpowered 1.6's they seem to want to push everyone towards and cars which actually require driver skill to get the most out of. I am not saying modern rallying is easy but it just all looks too effortless when compared to how hard Burns etc are having to work to hustle the cars along. They are literally taking the car by the scruff and throwing them at the corners, hanging the a*se out on every turn, drama that is sadly missing from modern rallying.

It's plainly obvious that these are the things that are missing from modern rallying, why can't the organisers see that?

God I miss the 90's for motorsport.
I was thinking exactly this. I'm gutted to think that when I eventually have children they will never be able to experience the adrenaline of just being at these events and spectating in that manner.

Still need to own an Impreza. P1 please

My dad bought a 2000 Turbo brand new when they first arrived in the UK. I think he waited something like 9 months for it to arrive!

I loved it. At the time, you could drive the scooby down the street and you'd get looks from everyone. They were soooo rare on British roads!

Of course now you see them everywhere, but I've still got a soft spot for that shape!

Nice one Dan! Enjoyed the vid. Love the classic scooby imprezas, the 22b was the daddy of them all imo. Will love to own a p1 or an rb5 one day.

The sound of that wastegate chatter!!!

My first forced induction was a N reg Scooby Turbo 2000 and I had Hayward and Scott full system on and a manual boost valve (dawes) which allowed flameouts.Poroper cackling and popping from overfuelling. The first car I properly modded myself.

Fancied one of hese years ago, never got one then
Was offered an early one last year with loads of tuning bits, but dirty cheap. Couldn't afford the fuel costs.
Someone the other day suggested LPG - anyone tried it?
Might make one affordable

ps best ever rally car noise was the Lancia Stratos - and still is in the hands of Mr P

My Old P1 is still one of my favourite cars, she was one of the last registered on a 51 plate. I wish Subaru would go back to making beasts like pre bug eye shape imprezas!

Ahhhhhh fond memories of 96 my series McRae, twas an awesome beast with bags of 'WTF!' appeal. At the time the only thing I had been in that came near it was a friends Delta Integrale, never drove his but he drove mine and instantly offered to buy it off me. I just laughed at him.

Agreed for me the classic shape is by far the best looking of them. As soon as Subaru made the hatch variant it just lost all appeal and rally heritage was thrown down the drain.

The only one I hanker for now would be the 22B but it's still a little bit too rice boy for me now. I couldn't imagine turning up to a client on a Scooby now!

Wow the group A machine really does sound a lot more raw that the later WRC car, any ideas why? Maybe the complex anti-lag systems they were running by then?

P.s would have loved to have seen Loeb at Subaru, just to see how it would have performed with him behind the wheel, it would have done his legacy a huge favour too driving for a manufacturer people are genuinely passionate about.

This does get the petrol throbbing through my veins again. Had a '03 post boggle eyed WRX that we spent some serious money on. Custom made decat, TSL remap, ruinous suspension lowering(why oh why did I do that) carbon adjustable wing....and (oh I cant believe I'm admitting this) a dump valve.

Loved it, commuted in it, drove it to the supermarket and it was fine, loved it even more on trips through Wales, up to and around Aberdeen, and one expensive road trip to South of France. The noise and the poise (pre suspension messup) was incredible...

Now, whenever my wife (not present back then) just tuts when I wind the window down to listen to a Scooby or ask her to listen when I can hear one even before I see it.

Sad but they did and still do it for me...

I don't think that one sounds angry, certainly not as aggressive as it should when you consider the cars setup, which makes me think it's probably more to do with how the audio was recorded than anything else - it does sound a bit lo fi imo.

Anyway, if you want your Impreza to sound wild (check out Gymkhana 1 or 2) add a decat downpipe, and this exhaust, the Crawford Gymkhana, which was developed by Crawford Performance and used on Block's car.

I run an effectively identical system on my Civic Type R and it does sound pretty nuts. Your neighbours and local police might not be so enamoured with your snarling beast though.

I somehow managed to wangle work experience 100 miles from my school at scoobysport in essex, even managed to get them to allow one of my school mates to come too.

It was the late 90s when Imprezas were reasonably rare still and my mate and I were mad about them.
Our first day was a ride out in their rally/track prepped car, short ratio gearbox, no interior, bucket seats, 18 inch wheels to fit 6 pot calipers in, and most of the bits they sold under the bonnet.

Still not been in a car that's felt as fast launching and stopping.
