Apologies if this is a pea-roast, but wtf is going on with rear number plate lamps?

I've noticed an increasing amount of cars with what I'd imagine are retro-fitted bulbs that are several times brighter than standard. Could be any car, but none that I've noticed were new, most seem to be from the Fatherland and the last one I recall was a silver E60 M5 (think that's right) tonight.

They are usually so bright, that the rear plate can't be seen properly. Is it merely the latest fad, a la German style plates or gangsta tints, or is it something more sinister?

I've seen a few glowing number plates recently. Also seen on the F1, Merc SL safety car. Are these legal?

Maybe. Or would the light from the bright camera flash cancel out the light from the bulbs?

thought they came standard on new cars particular mercs and bmws with hids? i have uprated bulbs allround, seemed natural to upgrade those too, think the whiter 5000k looks nicer than the orange tinge. Also shows my rear plate off nicely too - cant honestly say there is probably cause for concern.

People seem to replace the standard bulbs with Xenon-coloured LEDs, but the result is never very good. Some cars come with them from new, however, but these are much better and actually look quite cool.

New BMW's are the worst for it. They're so bright they make the rear number late look white as opposed to yellow. Totally chav in my opinion.

Bit like the new twinkly DRL's on Range Rovers. Utterly hideous.

Interesting use of the awful panel gap - stuff it full of DRLs.

Nice.

But just to reiterate, it's the rear I'm on about, and so bright as to almost completely white-out the rear plate. Bizarre.

My old man's 2006 Lexus IS250 has LED bulbs to illuminate the rear plate - not been changed by him so I assume are standard fit. They're not overly bright but I noticed them with the boot open as they're a much whiter light than a standard bulb.

There's loads of gash bulbs on ebay which on the principle more=better will light up your plate like the proverbial xmas tree with 3/6/9 LEDs - all for pennies.

I noticed Philips and Osram are now getting in on the game with products that aren't quite as cheap and nasty looking, but are so ridiculously expensive by comparison I can't see many people opting for them.

Nothing wrong with LEDs but probably needs some experimentation to get the right number of LEDs in a replacement unit so it gives similar light output.

Do you have HIDs in projectors or reflectors?
