E39 M5 Touring

Did they not do this in LHD?
Nope (well, they built a prototype). They did an E34 M5 Touring in LHD though - that what you're thinking about? A mate of mine has one.

C
You're right - it was the older one. I remember seeing one parked up at a hotel in Cadiz & thought it was ace - your mate has a very cool car!

Didn't one of the guys from the prodigy drive one of those?

Was that the one?

XJ-S Coupe (note the Daimler grille)

How about a E500 Coupe?

Actually it isn't. It's a Porsche mule to test a watercooled V8 front engined application from the early 90's. Note the super wide rear arches. Seen here in the Porsche Museum.

Audi's sensational still born S Type mid engined prototype

There are loads of after market W201 190 convertibles but apparently this is one under test from the factory. Could be a dodgy 'shop though

This briefly saw the light of day on this weekend 2 years ago ,when Walter Rohrl was entrusted to drive it at the Eifel Historic

Rallye festival.

There was also 2 different configuration of Toyota MR2 Group S cars that weekend too.

Of it's time, but I loved the look of the RS1700. At least the engine developed for this car found a home in the RS200.

Fiat were apparently spotted testing by one of the numerous car magazines back in 1997 (think it might have been Auto Express) of a grey Cinquecento Sporting fitted with the engine from the Punto 75.

This was rumoured to be the new proper "Abarth" model complete with the existing bodykit that was available as an optional extra on Sporting models with skirts, front bumper inc round fogs, rear spoiler and 14" speedline designed abarth alloys. It did look the business in gunmetal grey. It was even fitted with lovely red seat belts!

The engine was 1242cc multi-point injection giving 75bhp/83lbft @3000rpm and the headline was that this represented an increase of 20bhp over the current Sporting model that was fitted with the 1108cc single point injection motor from the Punto 55 (some reports actually stated 54bhp/63lbft).

The rumour mill also suggested testing with the Punto 6 speed gearbox.

This would have been a mighty city car back in the day in a car that only weighed around 750kg. In todays terms the figures are really low but having owned a standard Sporting I can vouch for how much fun that 55bhp was so one with 75bhp would have been a real urban riot. It would be fun today still......

How close to the truth the article was about what was really under the bonnet will never now been known I guess unless we have a Fiat insider here?

I'm sorry I dont have a photo. Wish I has kept that old magazine as the feature made the front cover.........

I have emailed steve fowler editor at auto express to see if he can assist with a library photo or two smile

BMW Nazcar would have been nice - don't think BMW have ever really done a supercar or even a super-sports car before like Mercedes or Audi have.
