RE: Driven (briefly): BMW M3 CRT

I'm not pleased with this vehicle as much as I would like. The CSL and GTS seem like better motor head cars. A test bed for all these new technologies and it's mileage is worse than a MP4-12c. The brakes and wheel hub look rather interesting
Hence the death of BMW's wonderful high revving V8 re mpg. Fuel consumption, running costs... The only thing that stopped me buying an E92 M3.Mermaid said:
Amazing bit of kit, and it was offered at a smidge under £60k. But they did make 1400 or so. If they had made 200, the price would have been £100k I suppose.
But standard E46 M3 was what 40k? so it was still a 50% mark up..this gets significant brake upgrade and new engineMermaid said:

Makes you realise just how cheap the CSL was......even though it seemed totally the wrong price at the time.

Expensive car in 'costs too much' shocker (and compared to a Porsche, for good measure), despite them all being sold. Why these sorts of comments always appear in threads for cars like this is beyond me.
You might argue that they actually sold them too cheaply, if they were all snapped up quickly.

Sidenote- what does CRT stand for?
Carbon Racing Technology? 300bhp- yep, very poor choice of acronym- not up there with STI, but close enough.

Clearly the prime reason for BMW building this car is to gain experience of the manufacturing, assembly (and probably repair!) techniques for the new technology in a low volume, low risk environment prior to their introduction in more mainstream cars in the near future.
The fact that the price is £50k more than a standard M3 is neither here nor there. The total additional revenue the 67 cars has brought in is only £3.5m , which is a drop in the ocean on BMW overall finances.
It would be interesting to hear the views of someone with experience of how manufacturers set the quantities and prices for these special editions. Is it related to recovering some or all of the development costs, or more related to what the market will stand?

Looks a fantastic Q car :-)

Lovely. For me the 4 door looks better than the 2, just like with the C Class.
Anyone know why they CRT'd the saloon and not the coupe?
Probably the same reason why they made 67 of them, cos they had some spare 4 door shells lying around which they haven't been able to shift.Anyone know why they CRT'd the saloon and not the coupe?
Looking at it in those terms, the CRT is no better than any other run-out special

But its all irrelevant as the CRT all sold out instantly and none came here!
And , yes, you're quite right ,the CSL is a fantastic depreciation free bargain.

The CRT and GTS have a much more special interior than the CSL. The CSL had bespoke seats and a lightweight bootfloor. The CRT has much more trick interior with 4 full carbon seats wrapped in leather for a start.
The CSL had carbon door inserts and transmission tunnel "housing" etc which I don't think the CRT has. Apart from the seats and some nice trim the CSL looks more bespoke to me ?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
