if you cant park you shouldnt drive...

its ridiculous. all these gadgets that are taking the actual driving away from, er, driving... what happens when these inevitably fail?.. its glossing over the issue, not resolving the problem...

Where have you got this from? I've had several and never had any issues.

Self driving Audi's?

GREAT IDEA!!

if they were fully automated it would stop the total an utter wker prick Audi drivers who cut you up, never give way, never let you out and want to get every where first, from ruining your day.

Bad news for me is that I will be sadly giving up my BMW for a new Audi A4 (new lease car) and I will have to join the wkers club. Just when BMW's lost the dick head image the Audi's have taken up the baton with the ahole attitude to driving. I know i must have offended some Audi owners but if you get on a motorway today, you are more likely to get tailgated and cut up by an Audi than even a rusty Transit Van wink

Clever technology but doesn't appear to be anything new, I'm sure I remember seeing a fully self-parking Passat 4 or 5 years ago.

EDIT: This was it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rFTe0o9oC8 . All the cars in that video look really old now!

Needing sensors outside the car rather negates the point of this sort of technology.

Indeed, infrastructure based methods are not the way forwards.

So when it malfunctions and hits someone or something how's that going to work for the insured? Nah, wasn't me! Could be good for scammeras, "er I wasnt driving at the time sir"
Surely this is where the problem will be - If the system has a glitch and runs into something in the car park, is that the owners insurance, or Audi's problem?
Totally this. I guess it would be the owner / 'driver' that would ultimately carry the can though.
Surely it would be the journalist who quoted from the press release who would be liable??

There was a wonderful cartoon in Punch many years ago that showed a bewigged judge looking at the accused, and then saying to the clerk "fetch me the law for the rich"

I'm just waiting for the inevitable litigious fat yank to run himself over when attempting to self-park one of these, if you can't easily park a car yourself, you shouldn't be allowed to have a licence (or 'license', if said litigious fat yank is reading).

Audi - You remember how excited we all were when you made the Quattro ? The nicely understated original A4 ? The thundering R8 ? Your rallying success, your decent diesel engines, etc etc... please, try and excite us with innovative engineering again. This stuff is cack.
Well said Sir. Please give us delicious handling cars we want to drive, not this way out of driving them...

How about car parking spaces being designed for the wider cars such as the audi a8/people carriers etc, that will cut down on the number of parking incidents.

Looks like Audi are one step closer to their dream of completely removing any\all driver involvement from the equation (some would say they aren't too far off now smile)

Still, could be handy if you've gone out and had one too many jars...take me home Jeeves.

I'm all for this. No more dings from people that can't park. And no more squeezing out of a car so I don't ding someone else's!

Tomorrow Never Dies
BMW 750iL

Loaned to Bond by Q at an Avis rental station in Germany, this car is equipped with missile launchers, caltrops, self-inflating tires and a near-impenetrable body. The BMW can be remotely controlled via a special Ericsson cell phone. During a chase inside a carpark, Bond exits the car and remotely drives it to the rooftop, sending it flying off the carpark before crash-landing into an Avis station across the street.

Assume you mean the remote starters, you are not allowed to leave an unattended vehicle with engine running in the UK. Will find reference but that's why no cars are sold with it unlike the US, don't know if it is enforced aftermarket.

On the flip side, you would no longer have people driving round a car park looking for the perfect space, or sat there, blocking everyone, because someone is walking towards a car, and they may be leaving, and they want THAT space! The cars would just go to the nearest space, and park up, and dithering fktards would be a thing of the past! assuming all cars got it in the end!)
