Had a look at a few today. They really do feel quality and at reasonable prices.

What other recommendations do you have for jackets?

What's people's views on these;

As a casual jacket / nipping to pub etc?

I'm in need of a jacket and some inspiration.

Quilted jackets are crap and make you look like a sheep (metaphorically, and also literally).

If you want a Barbour, then get a wax one or don't bother.

For chavs ?,The people queuing up for them at the Barbour factory shop in South Shields would argue otherwise.

Never seen chaos with new Range Rovers filling up with Barbour gear before.

Definitely not a quilted one.

I've got a very scruffy but wonderful Barbour Beaufort that I inherited from my Grandfather - it's 30+ years old. He was a few inches shorter than me so it's a touch small, though only noticeably in the arms. When I have a bit more money I'm going to pick up another second-hand off eBay in a size bigger. They're fantastic things.

Hoggs of Fife do decent waxed jackets (nothing compares to a waxed jacket) with lining or without. I have one with and its the warmest thing you could realistically wear. Unlike Goretex or other breathable fabrics they are completely waterproof, and you can repair them and re-wax when needed, so they have a pretty much infinite lifespan (and they look good battered)

Hoggs are a bit cheaper than Barbour too. - I think mine was around £50 or so a few years ago. smile

I've had a Solway Zipper for 39 years. It's just going away for some TLC. I don't think many bits of outdoor wear could have put up with that sort of treatment for so long.

I have a black wax jacket with silver buttons. Had it over a year now.
Fantastic jacket. Comfy and very warm to wear. Cost was very expensive but it's a high quality jacket.
Quilted ones are for chavs, plain wax ones are not.

I hate wax jackets. They smell mouldy, they look mouldy and they make me look like a farmer.

Stopped off there last year, was certainly a strange experience, a real mixture of clearly loaded people mixed in with the 'push a pram' brigade and both just as annoying biggrin

That creates the risk that strangers might not be impressed when pictures of said item are posted.

You can't beat an old Barbour....I have had mine since 1992, and it looks like it. Been with me everywhere from the arctic circle to the South Atlantic.

I've used it as a pillow when sleeping outdoors in the mountains of Northern Cyprus, as a fashion accessory when it was new on the streets of Milan, as a water bottle carrier in sands of Nevada, as a rain protector for going shopping, It carried cameras and Microphones on numerous jobs, heped me blend in when I was invovled in the biggest job of me life. I have used it as something to carry my dear old dog in on his last trip to the vet, and as something to wrap my new puppy in to bring him home for the first time.

It has been referbed by Barbour twice....and is due another trip to South Shields. Its mainly used as something to keep the rain off in the summer these days. Another year before I send it off again I think.

Get one. But get a proper one.
