RE: Minker K1: PH Carpool
Discussion
I love old school leftfield stuff like this with a good story behind it.
Great to hear the owner is actually driving it and getting so much joy from a rare car.
I wonder where the other two are? Somewhere in a collectors air sealed garage probably, generating zero fun.
Cars are made to be driven. Some; hard. Sir I salute you!

Thanks for sharing, I remember reading about these back in the day, probably in Fast Lane? Had totally escaped my memory though!
Good man for keeping it going.
And me. The second I saw it I was taken straight back to seeing adverts, probably in Car, Performance Car or Fast Lane. Can't remember seeing an article about it but will be having a determined root around in the mag library tonight.Good man for keeping it going.
Performance is 100% correct.
I have been involved with XR4x4's for many years, and have helped carry out 2 twin turbo conversions on a friends 2 XR4x4's - in fact the last one we did we managed to get hold of a Minker ecu and ran it on that.
It made 282bhp and 280 lb ft of torque, and at a test day on Kemble Airfield a few years ago comfortably ran 0-60 in 4.7 seconds using Racelogic timing equipment (On budget tyres no less!) it also ran this 3 times in a row, and with more practice and better tyres I have no doubt it would have been 4.5 seconds - that is with less power and torque than a genuine Minker.
Have a few minutes on Youtube and search 'Twin turbo XR4x4' - there are plenty of video's showing how quick these old tanks are
And to the gent who ownes this, please get in contact if you ever want to sell it!

I love hearing about things like this!
Apparently there was a company called Savage who put the 2.8 in the mk2 XR2. I'd love to find out more about that but I've never found anything.
The company was Jeff Uren. He put V6's into MkII Cortinas etc. they were known as Savage Cortinas...Apparently there was a company called Savage who put the 2.8 in the mk2 XR2. I'd love to find out more about that but I've never found anything.

A friends dad owned the red one for a few years (about 10years ago) it was up for sale again recently for something like £4500. I thought it would be worth a punt but decided I didn't have enough spare money to buy it.
I'd expect the values will be rising now the UKs populace of Petrolheads know it exists

More to the point the little thing called inertia? A "0-60" time of 4 seconds just to spin up the inertia of the drive train, wheels and dynamometer kit versus the inertia of taking a tonne of car from rest would equate to a slow car indeed. What am I missing?
The results you get from a rolling road are generally processed by a computer that tries to account for things like that... with greater or lesser accuracy, depending on how it's set up.Hmm, I want to like it and I am sure it is pretty quick but it has a look of an 80's Sierra that has had a late nineties bazzing.
Its a bit like a Tickford Capri, a fairly naff bodykit if we are being honest stuck on a Capri then adorned with the tackiest "Tickford" script on the back, then the interior Aston Martin-ified which was nice but kind of reminded me more of a funeral car for some reason. Havign been in one I can say they were certainly quick enough and obviously a rare and valuable variant but another that, to the uninitiated looks like a homebrew styling attempt.

Not overly keen on the look of the Minker, but appreciate what it has underneath.
Met Geoff Kershaw last year, who created that special car (he is the founder of Turbo Technics, http://www.turbotechnics.com/www/?page_id=8) and has a derivative of that car he uses for sprint/hillclimb events. His race car has had a lot of work gone into it, with bespoke mechanicals and massive (Nascar spec, afaik) gearbox to cope with the torque and traction it now puts out.
Heard he broke the car in an off recently but it is already repaired and being fettled for it's next competitive outing. Nice bloke, Geoff. Engineer, enthusiast, businessman and competitor.

This is great. I love these small production specials by tuning companies.
Reminds me of an article i saw years ago (in Max Power i think) of a Getrag Escort Mk2 RS Turbo which was rear wheel drive. They built a small number of them to test their gearboxes i believe. I still look in the classifields every now and then hoping to see one for sale!
