Wow, sounds like a lot of fun for little outlay!
I've bought it! He was offered £800 p/x so is happy at a grand. Even WBAC value it at £1155. Don't think I can go wrong. Its only a 140 but should be a nice car for the money smile

Decent price for one of those, their days of Max Power and council estate specials are over now and the sporty ones especially are rising in price

"Engine light coming on"..."plugged in and checked" - plugged into what?

Presumably that's the oil pressure or alternator light then!

Beards. A 1999 W202, 2litre auto in elegance trim with 100k miles. What to look for? A friend has seen one for £600, wants me to look at it with him. Are the main gremlins still rust and HG? MOT history seems sound and honest, no real blanks, but that doesn't always tell the whole story.

What say the experienced masses?

The main thing, by far, to look for on any 1996-2003 Merc is... another car.

True story.

E class, I agree fully. But a nice basic C is an attractive mini barge, surely they can't be that bad for 600 quid...

Having just recently bought 2, a 1996 1.8 Elegance auto 124k miles and a 1999 C230 auto Sport Kompressor 99k miles and not having done as much research as I should have, heres a few pointers ( courtesy of both MB forum and magazines plus other members)

1. Rust is an issue, all arches, door bottoms, boot floor, boot lock, jacking points/sills need close inspection.
2. Usual test run issues, blue smoke, oil leaks, smooth transmission ( if 100k has ATF been changed?), any clunks/rattles from suspension.
3. Key fobs/central locking give bother especially post 1998 cars as the key fob can give up and the EIS module needs replace, pay mega buckets. Operate
3/4/5 times before and after test run. Get two keys as a spare £160 or £240 from MD. HG may be an issue for some engines, I believe C240 worst for
this.
4. Electric windows/sunroof, can again fail, check 3/4/5 times before and after test run. Like wise single wiper needs to run smoothly and do complete
sweep, known to give bother. Ensure all warning lights come on and then go off, issues with ASR light. Also pixels fail on dashboard.
5. Leaks into front footwell, blocked drain on front scuttle, same for sunroof or failed seals.
6. Go for a decent test run, 20 mins variety of surfaces, got caught out when warped discs only showed up on run home!

Basically if the car looks well, drives well and has a decent history then buy it!

hehe

Check all electrics - stereo system including CD changer, aircon, heated seats etc etc. It is all unreliable and may require complete replacement for ££££s.

There are semantics and then theres semantics, am I correct in thinking you flushed the total Mercedes output for 6 odd years down the pan?

I had a 2000 W202 the 2.3. I really liked it, but rust became an issue. The earlier ones to about 1996 had oil based paint so rust a bit less. All I can add to the above post is that a load of weird electrical issues and dash errors and things like the cruise not working can come down to replacing the brake light switch down at the pedals. Fiddly but cheap and the switch was cheapest from the main dealer surprisingly.

These any good? Apparently, AC fan is noisy sometimes and clutch is quite high, but seller says it's been like this for a few years. Tracking needs doing too and there is a big scrape on the front corner:
