Really 'Occasional, slight Clonk from n/s/f' sounds pretty minor and commensurate with all cars this age. Billy bargain
Almost considering 6 hours on the train ...
I know it's on at sub-grand, but the re-map puts me off, and there's a scratch and a clonk. He lists the filters, plugs and pads as a positive but they were 2015-jobs. Cheap yes, and decent cars certainly, but the Holy Grail it ain't.
True, well spotted. I am a sucker for a lengthy ad: I think it is partly the number of terrible ads for terrible cars I have read recently! Doesn't seem to be anything decent and local.

There's a peach of a Merc E430 for sale on the smoker barges thread. He's after 2,500 or so, and is a proper enthusiast. Worth a look?

It looks lovely, but sadly (a) a little over budget and (b) I don't think I am brave enough to run a 17yo MB! Though, saying that, would a 17yo MB be more expensive to run than a Saab/Volvo/Lexus/Honda etc. of similar vintage, all of which I would consider?

If it's over budget, it's over budget, but I wouldn't let the name on the boot affect your decision-making too much either way to be honest. All cars of this age, and at this price point, have the potential to bite you so buying well is the best insurance against a shock.

I'm tempted, it's nearby, but that generation Celica doesn't get a good write up as a drivers car. Coupe Avensis basically...
Speaking of Avensis’, I just bought this for £500.
1.8 petrol, 168k with a new engine at 80k, FULL main dealer service history, receipts for everything from new from Toyota main dealer.
Bodywork has a few scrapes/ lacquer peel but it’s generally tidy. It’s humongous inside, everything works inside, dual climate control etc.
It’s about as boring as possible but after coming from a modified small hatchback, it feels like the height of luxury!

Crikey, that is cheaper than a taxi or parking at some of the places I have to go. You're right; you just would.

Anyone fancy a limousine in budget?

More appealing than a Sharan or a Zafira, that's for sure.

Shame the tax is a stupid £190 a year, almost doubling the upfront cost straight away.

Do you actually think £190/year is high?!

Surely it’ll be around £240 - the larger engine tax on pre 2002 cars is similar to the flat rate for vans which is around that

I think the tax is a red herring. You're going to have to pay some kind of tax whether it's an expensive car or not; I wouldn't turn down a free car in working condition just because the tax was £300.

I figure that fuel, insurance and tax is just one of the running costs that come with car ownership. I don't have a problem with paying it on a cheap car - mainly because if the cheap car explodes, you just stop paying the tax ...

Yep. The way I see it, the less you spend on the car, the more you have to spend on fuel.

Annoying advert, but it does look clean and I do have a love of an early Focus.
