They're all bewitching, but the increasing extreme measures mean the RS4.0 is my favourite.
Be interesting to hear from someone who's driven most of the range to what they prefer though. I seem to remember someone telling me the 996.1 was the best (although that was before the RS4.0).

I prefer the interior of the 996 Mk2 as long as its got leather dash and door cards it just looks less clinical than the 997. It's got to be a club Sport spec as makes it more focused, that's my 2 pennys.
Saying that I'd be quite a happy bunny with any of the others as an early Christmas present please

Having been fortunate enough to own a 996 second-gen and now a 997 first-gen, I'd say that the best of the breed is...
The first one: the GT3.
It's the original iteration of the breed and is, IMO closest to the ethos of what the GT3 philosophy was about: creating the ultimate expression of a road-going 911. The 996 Turbo was faster, but nothing beats the purity of focus that created the original GT3.
I'll be the first to admit that the GT3 later became diluted to some extent, with increases in weight (996 second-gen); then traction control and electronic dampers (997 first-gen); and now *&^%£"! PDK (991 first-gen).
It's the latter symptom of 'progress' that irks me the most though. Up to the 991, all GT3's shared the same basic charterer: they're raw and require commitment to drive properly. I'll reserve final judgement until I've driven the new car myself, but for the time being I am concerned that the original philosophy which created the breed in the first place has been forgotten.
I hope I'm wrong.

I have a 4.0 and i can only agree that it is a truly brilliant car to drive. The throttle response and front end grip sets it apart from the "normal" 3.8 RS. It is loud inside and the gear change is (still) a bit sticky so I can see the attraction of the PDK in the new GT3 for those people who prefer that. I met Hans Joachim Stuck, the former F1 driver and Le Mans winner who now works for Volkswagen Group at a rally in Austria last week and he confirmed, that the 991 GT3 RS will not be coming with a manual option so the 4.0 will be the last of the manual GT3s.
