Looking to buy some snow chains.

Ideally I would like to use them potentially on different cars, ie take them with us should we be in my car or the wife's, or indeed a friends.

My car has 16" wheels, so are they adjustable a bot for say 15" or 17" wheels, or are they strictly one size of wheel only?

Thanks for any help

Sets I've bought have been single size. Adjustable just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

It all depends on the tyre profile really, you do get a little bit of adjustment. But not Landrover to mini amounts.

You will find that a given size of snow chain will fit a small range of tyre sizes. So you need to check carefully when ordering a set of chains because it's not something you want to make a mistake on. BTW makes sure you have a pair of tough gloves because fitting them can me messy and uncomfortable.

Thanks for the replies.

I understand what you are saying-I realise that you cant go from 15 inch to 20 inch, but perhaps 15-16" is possible.

Have a look on the website/pack of the chains.

They are adjustable and will include a list of all tyre sizes.
Obviously not just height but a ratio of height/width.

As others have said, one size will cover a number of fitments, but there won't be much range.

Michelin are very specific with their sizing, here's a table of what fits what which should give you some idea of the flexibility:

It's only possible if the wheel/tyre combo is effectively the same size. You will need to input your exact tyre size to get the right chain.

Be aware that chains are not v.easy to put on and will be of ltd use in the UK.

Thanks for that. Mostly will be used in the Alps.

I thought the locals use studded tyres instead.

These appear to work in different sizes on the same base product

I think you would be best off finding out what chains will fit your vehicle - if you can fit the wrap-around type - they are only about £50-60 anyway. If clearance is an issue, then you are looking at the ladder-type which are £250-300. I would steer clear of anything that requires tools to adjust - chains are a bd to fit anyway and, if they come off, flapping chains in the wheelarch could prove expensive.

So, if cheapy chains will fit, just get them as you need them, if you're looking at the expensive ones, decide which car you're taking or hire a set.
