So in every test other than snow the Reference Summer was top of the table? What tyre was it?

Not a real tyre, apparently. LoL

That's why i normally run ran sport 3s. In the greasy, wet and leaf covered roads we usually have I'm confident they'll work. Warm weather performance is irrelevant, mostly.
Her Astra has Rainsport 3... 225 wide and about 5mm but it's noticeably worse in wet weather / standing water at speed now.

Debating taking them off in lie of a set of 16" steel wheel with all season tyres as and when required, more to save the 18" wheels / Rainsports for the better weather... which up here usually means "still wet, just not snowing"

Winters are overkill to be honest... my Mum has full winters on her Mazda 2 and the handful of times we see snow doesn't outweigh the lack of grip in the dray / wet conditions, more so when my Volvo runs all seasons and has been terrific in all conditions including snow drifts.

Frankly I'm utterly astounded by how well the latter have lasted and the grip in all conditions, just can't see past them now.

As a rule the magazines don't publish their reference tyres, so I had to make a blank holder. It will be a premium summer touring tyre, like the Continental Premiumcontact 5 / Michelin Primacy 3 etc.

Just ordered a set of Toyo Snowprox, Anyone had any experience with them? Seemed to be the best value at 400 for a set of 4 (255 35 19) and (235 40 19)

Still painful though as they are mandatory here frown

I just ordered a set of Pirelli Sottozero 3 for my Exige V6. Very interested to see how they are on it. I’ve driven a few Ferrari’s on them in winter and they were great so I’m hopeful they’ll work well at taming 460hp in not ideal conditions

That’s what I’ve just stuck on my E class today, same widths and diameter as you but 30 profile rear and 35 front. Apart from the Dunlop’s no other manufacturer does that matching size combination, but the Dunlop’s were very expensive, and I’m a fan of Toyos.

One thing I did notice is that the fronts don’t fill the width of the rim anything like the summer Contis and they’re the same size.

No idea about the tyres themselves yet, as I’ve only driven a mile on them and there are almost no reviews on the S954

One day someone will be brave enough to test them against a decent summer tyre.

I've translated these all into English on tyre reviews.

What summer tyre do you classify as good in the tested sizes (most often 205/55 R16)?! As far as wet grip goes, the Conti is usually top.

It would be also be helpful/interesting to know what the ambient air/road surface temperature was during each test.

The difference in dry and wet braking is significant, found that a little surprising. Really does show that, for most (like 99% of the time) winter conditions in southern parts of the UK, if using winter tyres you'd be on the wrong rubber.

Without knowing the temperatures at which the test was carried I wouldn't come to that conclusion looking at those results.

The tests (barring the snow test obviously) could very well have been performed at 20c for all we know.

My tyres turned up this weekend.

I'm debating when to swap over. As previously mentioned I'm on 18' rainsports. Until it starts to freeze I expect them to perform better, but I'm also fed up of cleaning my deep dish alloys!

Anyway, here's what UPS brought to my door!

I'm just back from a three week driving holiday is Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro...

Why do you suppose almost every car was shod in the likes of RainSport 3's or winter tyres??

If that was a response to me..

Currently on rainsports. Have purchased winters. No actual summer tyre in the mix at all.

It wasn't sorry, I was posing a genuine question to the thread.

Why do motorists of warm country's choose winter or rain tyres? Are there reasons beyond price etc?

I've run rainsports 3 for 3 years now, apart from a very hot spell last summer they have been fine, an excellent all rounder. If I was in Scotland however, just now would be the time to consider swapping over to the 17" wheels and winters...

The UHP tyres as they are more relevant to most of us on here. I'm not bothered how a PremiumContact performs as I don't buy them.

Just a thought, but it might be worth having a trawl through one or two sites dedicated to Minis for some used wheels.

I got a set of 18inch rims with virtually new Falken Winter tyres for my Z4 for £350 off a site focussed on Z4s. thumbup
The genuine MINI 16 inch set is £900ish including tyres which is tempting. Only downside is they appear to be Runflat Dunlop Winter Sport 4D. How do these rate?
