Overtake haters
Discussion
I overtook a bloke in an Astra Estate after 5 miles of dawdling, just as we moved into an NSL, he was all lights and horn, oh do fk off, there is nothing that says I need to sit behind you when I have three times the engine power, life is sometimes unfair and enforcing your opinion of an acceptable speed on me is not your call, drive nearer to the speed limit in NSLs and people wont get pissed off.
If you perform any manoeuvre that requires someone else to hit the brakes, move over, think on their toes... then you are asking for trouble.
99% of other road users out there want predictable behaviour.
If you act erratically (in the eyes of others ) - then expect the fingers - or some random nutter taking it further.

You guys must have experienced this phenomenon. I seem to get it most when out on the bike, but had it in the car as well.
You pull out to overtake. There's a car coming the other way, but they're at a safe distance. When you're back onto your own side, the oncoming driver gives you a flash followed by some hand gestures. I assume to congratulate me on a splendid overtake.
My response is usually to do an overly cheerful wave back, or see how many headlight flashes I can get back at them before they pass me. My PB is 5 flashes back.
Anyone else experienced this?
I just want it to be summer again so these sad people can start doing it to me again You pull out to overtake. There's a car coming the other way, but they're at a safe distance. It's becoming more common, for all of the reasons mentioned above:-
- Lemmings
- "queue jumping"
- BRAKE / "speed kills"
- OMG someone is doing something I'd never do...it must be dangerous, engage Daily Mail mode!
Having a fairly 'blatant' performance car (well, 2 actually) probably doesn't help my case with some of these idiots...but I'm not going to conform to mundanity just because of other people.

Far too many people take it personally - if a rather nice piece of metal is overtaking me, I quite enjoy it as I get a better glance/sound of it. If its not dangerous or inconveniences me then I don't care.
we don't all walk 2 feet behind each other line by line in the street do we? I dont stand still when im on an escalator, I often 'overtake' them, so I don't particulary care if someone arrives at their destination before me

It's only your opinion that they haven't had to brake or shouldn't have needed to brake.
It's not really 'opinion', it should be a judgement based on experience. Unless you are a complete idiot it's quite possible to judge whether you can overtake safely or not without causing oncoming traffic to have to brake. Some people are just massive drama queens that like nothing better than to cause a big fuss over nothing.Troubleatmill said:

I quite agree, but that's not what is being discussed.Yep, happens all the time.
Even my Mrs has commented on the amount of people doing it and she thinks that if you can see a car on the opposite side no matter how far away that you shouldn't overtake.
Or the full beam dheads at night who speed up and sit behind you blinding you.
Drives me nuts.

On a recent NSL overtake I received no fewer than 12 headlamp flashes from an approaching Volvo after I had returned to the left side of the road!!!
I have watched the dashcam videos (front and rear) several times and still can't understand the problem.
Wow, 12 is impressive. Looks like we may have a new champion.I have watched the dashcam videos (front and rear) several times and still can't understand the problem.

I think a lot don't have any comprehension about overtaking ability beyond their mighty 1.6 Astra or Focus, "its pretty nippy you know"
Not only that but they have no idea what the gearstick does, the last time they tried it the car make a scary noise and the funny needle went to 4000! The car will explode for sure if it goes higher.J4CKO said:

This is exactly the problem, these 40mph everywhere automatons, who are oblivious to the capabilities of their cars and are wilfully ignorant of what an NSL is.I've never been flashed or tooted at for overtaking, I did have someone try and speed up to stop me overtaking - nothing coming in the opposite direction for at least a good half mile, and the car in front was happy to do 50mph, unfortunately he apparently thought I should stick to his imposed speed limit too. When I got past he tailgated me for a short distance before dropping back to 50 and disappearing in my rearview.
I've not done a great deal of overtaking on the bike yet - DAS lessons round here are mostly urban riding, as the bike test is only 40 minutes, so you can really only go 20 minutes away from the test centre before turning back. However, some of the roads I've ridden are good for overtaking, I've not experienced rage from cars I've overtaken on a bike, overtakes come so fast on a 600cc bike that by the time the driver realises that he is being overtaken, the bike is already overtaking the next car and the driver is being overtaken again by the instructor.

a vast number of people seam to have forgotten that
a) NSL is 60 not 39 (and they carry on doing 39 when they hit a 30 zone)
b) its legal to overtake them
the people most often who flash you for overtaking around here are the nearly dead, its so funny as by the time they have worked out you have overtaken them, that they are enraged by this and where the flashers are you are 800 yards down the road
