I always loved these, apart from the actual face (the lights just look too 'sad') this was for me another restrained Gandini classic. All Gandini trademarks present and correct smile

But they always did shout "money pit" whenever you looked at them...

I bought my Ghibli Cup new in 1997 from Nigel at Meridian who were then the sole importers this was the same time as Harry Metcalf (who was then with Performance car I think or Fast lane) bought his. His had a black interior mine has a cream one. We both sent them to Bill Macgraths for the steering columns to be altered to improve the driving position which it did and I copied Harry and bought some Recaro seats as the originals did not give much support, I had mine covered in cream leather. At the time it was the highest output of any production car at 160BHP per litre. I had had 3 E36 M3's before this 2 coupes and a cab but this was far more involving and fun to drive. There was lag but it really wasn't that bad and it could really pick up its feet. Plus it looked so different to other Bm's Merc's etc.

The interior was brill all leather and carbon plus that clock it was as good as any car I have had. I did have some rust issues from day one that were sorted by Meridian but I sold it 2 years later as all the work had to be done by them down on the South Coast but they usually sent a guy up by train to pick it up and drop it off. I paid £44k for the car and Meridian bought it back for £34k, I had no issues with the car bar the couple of rust bubbles on the front spoiler at the bottom of the windscreen. I can only find 2 old pics of it.

Sold mine (GT, not the more desirable Cup) getting on for a couple of months ago, after 6 and a half years. Miss it!

But the article is some distance off on pricing.

I also believe the later Ghiblis (the 2.8 litre as well as the 2.0 litre Cup) also picked up the rear axle from the Ferrari 456 when, as the article says, they received the six-speed Getrag gearbox
The same applied to the later autos as well.

I might be imagining things here but did Harry M have a Ghibli 2.8 to Cup specifications before he had his 2.0 Cup? Seem to remember it was Dark Blue and with an Auto box but with Cup wheels, interior, suspension etc

Yes I think he did have a blue one before his Cup.

Just like the less exotic sounding Renault Wind.

Love these.

Slightly-more 'pumping' of the wheelarches, a roof design hinting at a targa top (but wasn't!) plus a 3.2 litre V8 engine - still with the twin turbos though - pushing out 325 BHP, I seem to remember.

Heres one for sale... http://www.richardgracecars.co.uk/listing/maserati...

Looks awesome. The ABS module the size of a house-brick did make me lol though

Good article,cool car.

While reading, was thinking if they go for the same price as a Biturbo,I'd take a punt on one. Was shocked when I read 30k!

They must be Very Desirable.

I picked up a Ghibli a few weeks back. Cracking car to drive biggrin
Mine is a lowly 2.8GT though, not the cup. Good article on a car that gets often overlooked!

That Shamal is a thing of beauty, love it! I cant but help see lots of ££££ disappearing into that very busy looking engine bay.

I think these will be inline to appreciate significantly, although some military grade man maths required to justify one on speculative value!

^ This site has some sections of reviews from Andrew Frankel and EVO as well.

If it looked like a shamal (ok they are pretty similar but the Shamal looks just, 'right-er'), It would perfect.

There was a French blue (or whatever it is called) Cup for sale in the PH Classifieds until a month or two ago.

Car was Essex based and I was sorely tempted to go and have a local with it being so local. IIRC it was circa £17k and was mint so I am not sure where 30k comes from.

This was even quicker than the Ghibli according to one test
