How that horrid little man managed to beg and borrow the money to purchase that car beggars belief.

It is such a shame that such a car ends up for sale with a Hartley.
I have no idea of TH Jr's financial status, but in the last few years as certain cars have become much more expensive, it has been common for a specialist dealer to get one or more wealthy backers to help him purchase individual cars, then split the profits.
I’m sure I read somewhere on here last year that his net worth was something about £25m, though no idea if that include his stock liabilities. I know he has sold some of the most expensive cars on the planet, particularly Ferrari’s, but I don’t know how that translates to paying maybe £20m for a single car - that’s a heck of a thing!

With the hartley car going on the market there's been a resurgence of that video on FB and various forums where running costs are discussed.

I was wondering, Flemke, whether you have ever totalled the cost of maintenance and upgrades on the F1? Maybe using similar to the PH garage option of repairs, maintenance, upgrades, fuel and cost per mile.

I have not attempted to calculate the total sum I have spent on the car since I bought it, but it would not be a small number. The preponderance of that amount would have been on my upgrades, not on normal maintenance.
I don't know the exact numbers, but a normal service (fluids, plugs, filters, complete inspection) is something like £2,500. These days the bag tank (once every 5 years, for the compulsive) is a bit over £20k. Things like tri-lobe joints are lifed at 20,000 miles. A new set of tyres is around £6k, IINM. None of those numbers is quite right, but they are the right order-of-magnitude. If you drove your car say 2,000 mi/yr, I think you would average £10-12,000 p.a. in maintenance over a long period.
The maintenance and service are not the expensive things. The expensive thing is insurance.

There is a thread somewhere on here about crazy expensive F1 costs that includes an owner talking about $50,000 to change tyres. Is he talking out of his exhaust pipe?

Slightly silly question perhaps. Do you sometimes regret the route you took with the car? It would have been a lot easier to live with the things you didn't like. Not so much in terms of the financial, but the time spent. It seems that very, very few other owners, even those that drive theirs regularly, have attempted to change too much. Or do you still get pleasure from the actual process of designing & testing improvements?

Slight tangent, have you modified any of your other cars to the same (or further) degree, or do you only modify the F1?

I am glad that I have done what I have done to my F1. It has taken far longer than it should have done, we have gone down some blind alleys along the way, and still there are a few things that I want to sort.
Nonetheless I am glad that I have done it. I have no doubt that mine is the best driving F1 road car there is. In the process of getting to where we're at, I have learned a lot, had a bunch of fun experiences, and become friends with some fine people whom otherwise I would not have known.
I would not have done what I have done if I did not like the fundamental car so much. I have done some "normal" mods on other cars, but nothing approaching this level of complexity and ambition.

It *may* be because the rules & regs say they 'have to'?

Ever wondered why the sun visors on the 12C hinge the wrong way and are completely utterly and totally useless?

It's because if they hinged the correct way they wouldn't pass the US safety regs' w.r.t an un-belted occupant impacting the hinge. McLaren wanted to do away with them altogether but another US reg states there must be an airbag warning label affixed to the sun visor.

Solution was hinging a 'sun visor' the wrong way (hinge is then no longer within area deemed to be an impact hazard for an un-belted occupant) merely so they could stick the required airbag warning label onto it.

wobble
I hate those bloody labels and the fact they are on every single sun visor in every single car over here.

BTW the cars also have the mandated illuminated trunk release buttons, despite the fact you can't fit anyone over four foot into it.

It's also possible to fit in the Cayman's frunk... but you can't reach the handle even if it's lit.

Knowing your 'ideal car' spec (and how closely it mirrors mine, even if you do want more power than I do!), the announcement by Mr Murray today is quite interesting...

Although I'm not sure the MSO HS a little of the way down is actually Flemke's as it's missing a front number plate.

wow, finally finished all 5 volumes.

Has been an interesting read for sure. Have definitely learned some things (that I need to get out more apparently :P)

thanks Flemke for all your effort smile

p.s. just bought reminiscences of a stock operator on a off the cuff recommendation you made about ten years ago :P

Well spotted. That car is definitely not mine. On mine the dive planes are painted white.

More broadly, I have no idea who the people behind this "agent4stars" website might be. Judging from the name of their site, they are obviously immature, which they have in common with probably about 50% of the world's population.
Of course I would rather that my cars (or anybody else's cars) not be advertised in this misleading and juvenile way, but that's one of the downsides of this internet thingy. Such is life.

Re Mr Livermore, it is fascinating that the essential things about markets have not changed for many, many years (in fact, I would say, not during recorded history).
