Spa 6 Hours 2014: the racing cars
Discussion
You wont find any period homologated lamp mounts (even simple steel brackets) for the majority of cars that race in the 6 hours, pick almost any car and you will find lights mounted in a way that has no homologation as auxiliary lights were not a required homologation on a racing car, so you must allow some flexibility or ban auxiliary lights outright. Clearly the latter would be ridiculous unless you want to see a plethora of bad crashes or no entrants. The current rules and application make a lot of sense IMHO.
The issue of more relevance to lighting is that no one uses modern HID type systems, so long as everyone is using conventional filament bulbs I don't see any issues there.
With respect to your red dot query, that will be down to the interpretation of the rules by the scrutineer involved. You should deal with that issue via the procedures in place.

Issue was dealt with successfully. Been racing "historics"and building them for a number of years, so hopefully know my way around such things
Tell me there were NO cars running hid lamps.
Alaine and Vincent had the best event in europe but unfortunately the original plan has been ditched in return for grid filling.A sure way of ending any race or event, its happened on numerous occasions before.
Six hour should be a real FIA event, not a pretend one.

That would be in your dreams T.
The world is fckd and you know it. Same with the Bernie show: when there's glam, status and money involved things will not seem what they are.
Well, maybe only the U2TC will come close.
By only using your ears you can hear how big the engine is and how high it revs. Period? A laugh.
By using your eyes you can see the lights.
It's no rocket science and everyone - I hope! - knows this. I see it as entertainment and a chance to experience real cars.
Should we change the rules, bend with the cheats, look the other way? Of course not. Let's enjoy ourselves ... or not.
As for now: I had a good time.
Hope you like the pictures! More to come fellas.

How could I not like them Albert, usual excellence. The world is fckd and you know it. Same with the Bernie show: when there's glam, status and money involved things will not seem what they are.

As for doing something about it? I did-voted with my feet after around thirteen years of doing the six hour.Ater many discussions concerning the conformity of various issues with the organisers (hid lights being one of them) and hearing that it will all get sorted on several occasions.
I still love Spa and am fortunate enough to work at the circuit , amongst others but the original format of the Six Hour has been destroyed by countless win at all costs owners/drivers.Who remembers who won it two years ago-no, dont look it up.

This clip clearly shows how incredible the sight was - near miss!

Open wheelers:
The legend that is a 3 litre DFV. The Masters Historic Racing F1 races are built around the 1000 kms V8 lifecycle. No warm up here, just go go go.
'78 ex-Vittorio Brambilla Surtees TS20. From its 1978 introduction, the Surtees TS20 was virtually obsolete. With it's traditional flat underbody design, it was no match for a new breed of F1 racers, the ground effect cars. Fortunately for Surtees, they were not the only team still running a flat bottom racer in the 1978 season. Among it's congeners the TS20 was one of the faster cars. Luck was not on the team's side but in the second half of the season, Rene Arnoux proved the competitiveness of the car, but noteworthy finishes were never recorded.
Julian Bronson in the mighty 1960 Offenhauser Scarab. Monoblock four, desmodromic valve action, full ally 2.5 litre engine: quite a sight!
Wow and wow. 220 brake / 7500.
Gorgeous Maserati A6GCM 2033 up for the warmup.
1954 Kieft GP - Coventry Climax Godiva V8 in. I did not peek inside but the rumoured 2.5 litre should have fuel injection and a vast 300 brake.
250F and well under 3 mins - well done!

There's only one Leo.
There was only one Denis ...
I asked my little girl what this was - It appeared to me only historic racing fans will get y=this one.
The nose of this 8.8 litre Lola CanAm is so low the brake and throtle pedals are horizontal and the clutch is vertical!
Next: engines!

Engines which almost all have phat Webers bolted on them.
Lola T70 Mk3B 5 litre Chevy hides behind the pilot cockpit.
My attention was drawn by this setup: intake between the cams.
With the engine running it was hard to make a proper snap, sorry. Straight six Bristol.
But what car?
It looked like a pre-Ace.
Anyone?

There you go:
Ford GT40 dominated LM from '66 tot '69. A bit odd these are allowed in todays pre '65 category, since they were hopeless in the first LM entry in 1965. Head of the Spa 6 Hrs grid has grown from 4 to 12 GT40 cars and last few years the winner is always one of these. Number 5 came in 4th, after 3 fellow GT40s. Glasel / Brack tandem did a good job: 2:46 best lap!
P8 Davies / Young GT40 whizzing by.
The Voyazides / Hadfield train. Quickest lap of the race (2:45) and last years winners. P2 in 2014.
Both Fords and both 289s in: what a compelling difference of 20 secs!
P36 noisy Notchback.
Why this P37 GT40 lapped 79 x and only got a 3:16 secs best is beyond me.
Always a cool sight and sound: Shelby Ford 350 GT.
Happy with this nose.
