RE: Nissan GT-R MY14: Review
Discussion
drove the MY14 earlier in the year for a couple of weeks. Was expecting it to be much like any other fast jap car (handles well, very quick, poor interior, lacking in a bit of 'personality') but I absolutely loved it. It really is something special. As others have alluded; the straight line speed only tells half the story and it would murder things round a track that are much more powerful.
I know too much is made of the lap times but the fact the Nismo lapped the Nordshleife in 7:08 speaks for itself.
Some of the relatively low cost upgrades look a bit tempting for owners as well.

My point is, Nissan wouldn't need all the ludicrous programming or anything like that if they made it lighter. 1.7 tonnes is obscene.
Personally I'd rather own something that actually allowed me to develop some skill instead of being able to drive it around a track with one finger on the wheel. That's what driving is about, not actually going faster than everyone else. you only need to go faster than everyone else if you're actually racing. Otherwise you need something that will make YOU better, not just make it all too easy. IMO of course.
Well buy something like that then! Theres plenty of stuff like that about.Personally I'd rather own something that actually allowed me to develop some skill instead of being able to drive it around a track with one finger on the wheel. No ones forcing you to buy a GTR. If it aint for you, dont buy one!!

Only car ive driven through the twistys and it had so much grip I felt physically sick. Mental carI know too much is made of the lap times but the fact the Nismo lapped the Nordshleife in 7:08 speaks for itself.

I admit I would have another but the criticisms regarding weight and lack of involvement are justified. OK not compared to a 911 TT or a 'normal' car but compared to gt3s, nobles, tvrs, etc it is rather heavy and uninvolving. Its epic but not subtle or blessed with real feedback (relative to other places one might spend the cash).

understandable comment but totally wrong- you need to drive and own one for a while to get them properly. Guarantee you haven't driven a GTR flat out then. I am not having a go at you personally, but the GTR doing all the work is a myth, and I'll wager it feels easy to some people because they are personally so far away from the car's limit that it all feels under control.
Push the limits in a GTR, and, for a road car, it is a serious piece of kit that needs driven hard and properly, to really come alive.
I agree with footsoldier. It's a bonkers car. I'm in my 4th year of ownership and driving it home tonight, just a short press on the peddle had me shaking my head in disbelief - I tend to do that after every drive in it, even four years on! It's never been like that in other cars I've had. I honestly can't see myself letting this one go - it's a keeper!
Remember these are what, seven years old now, albeit with a few updates, I cant wait to see what Nissan do next with the GTR.
They are mentally fast as standard, but a lot end up with a few choice tweaks and end up even faster, 650 - 700 bhp isnt uncommon, more is available depending how deep your pockets are.
Amazing that level of performance is available at less than 40 grand second hand, that used to be the preserve of millionaires, plus it is one car even Golf R drivers think twice about having a go at.

Why do people keep talking about weight? That's the secret (not really now) to it's performance, just watch the above vid, Mizuno points this out!
If you made the GTR lighter then the car would have to be re-engineered, with more aero instead of mass, and this would then make the car more expensive, and less stable on the track for beginners.
You have to remember the GTR was made to be the most usable super car on track and road...
The only thing Nissan need to do is to START refining the GTR, instead of upping it's power ever damn year!
Make the transmission smoother, less clunky. Or build a new one? Put in Direct Injection, this will drop it's Co2 improve MPG, and give it a better response time... Improve that dated and terrible (for a supercar) interior. UPDATE IT FFS!

The early models are clunky yes, later models are fine IMO. Mine's a year old and the gearbox is fantastic, as is throttle response, it almost knows what you want to do next, in angry mode it hurtles through the gears even with tiny increases in pressure by my right foot.
Clunky earlier models can have the latest Litchfield's gearbox software update for 300 quid, which gives the car a MY13 gearbox feel.
I'm thinking about a stage 4.5 on mine which would give it around 700bhp, just for extra overtaking safety of course. You can have switchable maps at a touch of the cruise button, adjustable launch rpm, and even rolling launch which cleverly builds boost while at a constant speed.

I have been very lucky to have either owned, driven or been driven in most of the sub 200k sports cars that have been around over the last 15-20 years.
I can say my 2010 GT-R which I ran for just over 2 years was hands down the best car. Practical one minute, loony toons the next, race helmet in the boot, golf clubs, a Tesco shop or kids kit, take your pick. My daughters loved it (it was named the McDonalds car, cos they loved the big m shaped trace on g force display during launches!), and with Litchfields servicing it meaning low cost and a weekend in Cheltenham my partner loved it, where could I go wrong??
MY15 may be a new itch to scratch.....

Best car i have been in; MY12 650 BHP, full bore launch was insane, its like going into warp speed.
Granted its not as 'refined' some of its rivals, but thats not what this car is about, its not meant to be the height of fashion and luxury, as others have said it bends the laws of what is capable whilst making you as teh driver feel a right hero!
Bring on MY15 ....

"it's too easy to drive" ...no correct that>> it's too easy to drive at YOUR limits, this car is so fast it is really difficult to drive at it's limits.
