Why do manufacturers use cd then, not cda, if that's more of a true representation?

Funny but I don't see much of a drop of in average consumption at the higher speeds.
+1

I get much worse fuel consumption in Town than I do on the Autobahn.

Six cylinders, six speed gearbox. BMW 325 Touring.

90 mph is 2700 rpm and so 120 mph is 3600 rpm. Redline is somewhere
about 7000 rpm, so it's not working *too* hard at typical autobahn cruising speeds.

Drag is just one of a whole host of real world factors at work.

I've hired lots of modern two litre turbo diesels (Mondeos, Insignias, Astras) and almost all struggle to better around 45mpg at 85mph.

What's amazing is that my 17 year old E39 523i gets 32mpg at 85mph, and that's without the benefit of direct injection, cruise control, or particularly decent tyres (came with Accelera Alphas when I bought it). (It also rides a lot better too, but that's another story).
