I don't know how it's supposed to be, but rather like it as is!
I must be getting old as I appear to be developing some fondness for the likes of this as well:

Had one in my youth. Absolute dog but was fun when it was running, and that one looks nice.I must be getting old as I appear to be developing some fondness for the likes of this as well:

No, you're getting old when you're not sure you can get in or out of one

From memory the HLE was aimed at ecconomy so had a long 4th gear, and (iirc) a low compression engine.
High compression, surely? Low would worsen fuel consumption. IIRC it needed higher octane fuel than the standard car.Edit: from http://www.dummett.net/ime/website/ime/a2z/metro_i...
Compression Ratios (Early Models
Low Comp. (1.0l inc Van) 8.3:1
Std Com (inc 1.0l and gala) 9.6:1
High Comp (inc L, HLE and City X) 10.3:1
I think the grille should be black and the front skirt shouldn't.
This is a W plate so one of the very first and probably a base model - my first was an ex-NHS car. The grille should be black, the arches, sills and front vallance body colour. Cannot tell if those arches are the extra add on or just paint but the extra add on ones were Metro Turbo.
The turbo was a 1300 with stronger (sodium filled) valves, slightly different head, bigger wheels and a rear anti roll bar. It was no faster than my ordinary MG Metro however just slightly tauter on the road. It also had extra vents in the bonnet, But I digress.
The HLE was a 1300, usually in metallic paint and (ours) had better interior trim, a sort of tweed seat material. For some reason our HLE felt more bouncy on uneven road surfaces as if it had stiffer suspension that our MG.
The beige one in question looks like a tarted up bitza, the seats are MG Metro or at least the covers are, i suspect fitted over the ordinary seats. It's the lights are what are puzzling me, there seems to be too big a gap above them. And the wheels are not original,

That is awesome, I really want that! On ebay, suspect it'll end up going for less than 5k. Sorely tempted to have a punt despite the official MOT mileage yo-yoing up and down over the years, looks in good nick and I love the 80's styling.
