The Orion Ghia was the performance model with the same 1.6 as the XR3i
and cheaper insurance. Which was why I saw a lot more friends and acquaintances of that era behind the wheel of Orion ghias rather than XR3is when we were <20.
I'd imagine more of a laugh to throw about too with that rear overhang.
Fwd so it was very much an understeer game.

Bit softer on the suspension than the hatch as well

Pretty roomy in the back too for the size of car

I know these are getting thin on the ground but with the dry rotting tyres and dirty interior £3k is a tad optimistic. Plus I noticed the same vendor has a Golf for sale too and they were asking £4500 for the saxo previously.
I think that's about on the money assuming it's standard. Very hard to find good ones now, especially unmodded ones.

My 1.6I Ghia would lift off oversteer quite easily... though not as adjustable as a Pug 205.

Bit OT, and i know it has been caught at probably its best angle, but the Maestro is a good looking car compared to the Ford and Vauxhall rivals! Looks almost modern

Yes, that's right - on 14s - same size as the XR3i
Did you have the pepperpot style alloys?

1st one I had was blue with white plastic wheel trims and spot lights. 2nd one was red with pepper pot alloys... I bought some spots for it and fitted them myself.

The pic is pretty much my 2nd one, except I don’t remember mine having a spoiler. Maybe it did... 30 years ago, and my memory’s not what it could be.

My 1st company car (at 21) was a base Sierra estate - 1.6 petrol, no cassette player, wind down windows etc. Ran that whilst training. Got an Orion when i got promoted to area manager 6 month later. Thought it was the DB’s at the time - leccy windows, wind back sunroof, headrests in the back, separate amp for the stereo... luxury!!

At the time I was doing c.2k miles a week, and our policy was new every 70k miles. So I had 2 in a year.

Surprisingly light for a 4-door saloon as well.

One of these with 4 big blokes on board ( and there was a decent amount of room in the back ) was lighter than an E21 323i BMW...……………..with no-one on board

Maybe a VTS, but I think that £3k is a bit high for any VTR surely?

I think your memory serves you well Chris

They didn’t have one as standard

However you could have one from the optional RS bodykit fitted from new at the dealer

I absolutely love it when people post the original articles for old stuff like this... Are you lot just scanning in your mags or is there a website where I can see all of this stuff?

Doubt our fleet manager would have signed off anything RS laugh

Though I did manage to get him to add a Subaru Impreza Series McRae to the list some years later biggrin

If memory serves correct - I had that brochure, the photography was fantastic, quite substantial too as every model was featured - That would have been from the 1988 motorshow at the NEC.

I have that brochure... along with probably another 3000+ original brochures from the late 60's to early 90's Used to come back from motor shows and showrooms with my dad with bags full of them and just continued collecting them....

Yeah, just thinking back I don’t think any of the faster Orions came with a rear spoiler.

When they were using all the old bits up for this shape at the end of the 80s/early 90, they did do the special edition Equipe with a rear spoiler

Put on the RS spoiler and 1600E type alloys but they didn’t get the 1.6i motor

This is what I'll never get.
Being featured somewhere or being owned by a certain person does not make a car more valuable. It's still the same car..
It works both ways.... Jimmy Savile's Rolls Royce wasn't the same car after his conviction..... it plummeted in price and had to have two more owners on it just to remove his name from the V5....
