Hi r14jrj

Thanks for getting in touch smile

That's it in a nutshell - if you pay £40,000 for your car and take a Back to Invoice+ policy from us, if your car is then declared a write off and your insurers pay you £25,000 (for example) we would pay you another £15,000. This means you then have your original £40,000 back.

Alternatively we also offer a Vehicle Replacement+ policy. This means that, in the same scenario, instead of paying up to the £40,000 invoice price we would pay up to the replacement cost of a brand new car of the same make, model and specification as the original, even if it costs more than you originally paid.

Hope this helps but if you have any other questions please let me know smile

Thanks,
Katie

Hi There,

I haven't used GAP insurance before so I am not sure what value I should be putting on the policy. I have recently taken delivery of a Seat Leon Cupra Black Edition (list price = £32,000) on a 1 + 23 month private lease.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Regards

Roger

Call ALA - based on the type of lease, length, repayments etc etc they will tell you what you need.

I had the misfortune to write off my car in November and as it turns out my car insurer has settled the cost of the car plus the repayments, so I didn't need the gap cover - I still don't understand why, but I'd not be without it.

One thing I do wish ALA had actually told me about when I took out the gap and excess cover is that you can also insure your initial payment/deposit up to a max of about 3000 pounds (if memory serves). I really wish I'd known about this, as to write your car off 4 months into a lease where you've paid 3 months up front is a bit of a blow if you then have to get another car. I've covered it with the new one but I'm a bit annoyed I never knew you could do it before.

Also worth noting - the gap cover off ALA also gives up to 250 excess cover in the event you end up claiming. I never knew this until the gap cover chap dealing with my case told me.

Hello Roger

Thank you for getting in touch.

If your lease car is written off, Contract Hire GAP will cover up to 100% of your outstanding rentals and any shortfall in the insurer's market value settlement. The easiest way to run through a quote would be to give us a call or to email your contact number to katie@ala.co.uk and I will be able to give you a call back - I would just need the monthly rental cost itself and I'll be able to provide you with some more information and a quote.

I hope to hear from soon smile

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Dog Star

I'm sorry to hear that your car was written off and also that the initial rental cover wasn't mentioned in our conversation - it can be difficult to go through all aspects of the policies but I do appreciate your feedback and this is certainly something we will take on board.

Thank you coming back to us for another policy and making these positive comments on the PH forum.

Thank you again,
Katie

i've been in touch with ALA regarding a Vehicle Replacement GAP i'd like to take out.

however my sales invoice (car bought from an OPC) shows a VAT rate of zero and a so a VAT value of zero.

ALA's policy wording states that a VAT invoice is required, else in the event of a write off they will only pay to the value of the Glass Guide at the time of purchase.

so 2 questions:

there must be many of you that have bought used - do you know for sure if you are covered?

if you bought used, does your invoice show any VAT on the purchase?

Have a policy for one car with ALA already but have been shopping around and can get 4 yrs £25k full replacement cover for £20 more then their price for 3yrs - which is clearly appealing. Anyone used gapinsurance 123 ? I'm tempted to go with recommendations here but as b BMW want another £25 for a service book and another £400 for a b spare wheel on this new 535d I'm having to cut my cloth accordingly!

Hello JasonSteel

Thank you for getting in touch.

By "VAT invoice" we mean that the invoice you receive from the car dealer must show that they are legitimately VAT registered and the correct VAT registration number. As long as it does, that will satisfy the policy requirements - it doesn't have to actually show any VAT has been paid, only the supplying garage is VAT registered.

Hope this clears up any confusion but if you, or any of our other customers, have any concerns please get in touch with us.

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Ken Figenus

Thanks for posting smile

I hope other PHers can give you some helpful advice on this and hope you don't mind me replying. We completely understand that buying a car is expensive (especially just after Christmas!) and everything starts to add up a bit. If it helps at all, if you would like to send me some details of your quote I'll be happy to see if there is anything I can do for you?

Thanks
Katie

that's what i thought, but the person i spoke to insisted that there needed to be a VAT figure > 0 to qualify. i put my point forward and was called back to say that if the VAT was zero then the car would not qualify. still dubious, and to avoid all doubt i even scanned the invoice and sent it to you but the email reply clearly and categorically states "We will be unable to use the invoice you have provided as it shows the VAT at 0. Therefore we would use the Glasses Guide retail value of the car at the time of purchase."

i've since found an alternative provider.

Hello JasonSteel

I think it is unusual for an invoice to show a figure of zero for VAT, as the profit on second hand cars is VAT-able and this may be where there has been some confusion. We're grateful for the feedback you've provided and I am glad you have been able to purchase a suitable GAP policy.

I'm sorry for the confusion and that we haven't been able to assist you this time around but if I can help any further please do get in touch.

Thanks,
Katie
