Hi, unfortunately my 335d was written off earlier this month.
How long does it normally take to get a settlement from the gap once the car insurance claim has been settled?

Many thanks

Hi S7uey

Thanks for getting in touch and I'm sorry for any confusion!

We are in the process of arranging extended warranty with a new supplier and we're hoping to have this available soon - it does unfortunately mean we can't quote at the moment however if you would like me to contact you once it's available please feel free to pop me an email (katie@ala.co.uk) with your details.

Thanks,
Katie
Hi Katie, I notice you now have the RAC extended warranty for cars. Is this as good as your previous offering?

Hi Stu

Thank you for getting in touch.

The terms of the cover are very similar to what we offered previously - there is of course the added bonus of a recognisable, trusted brand in the form of the RAC thumbup

Within all of the policies we offer, there is no policy excess, no waiting period or pre inspection and the claim limit on the policy is always the market value of the vehicle.

The prices are extremely competitive as well! woohoo

For yourself and anyone that would like any more information you can have a look at the website - https://www.ala.co.uk/warranty/ (which provides copies of policy documents) and if you have any questions at all please let me know.

Thanks,
Katie

Hi my daughter is buying a new VW T - Roc on a PCP. It’s some way from delivery. The dealer quoted £350 gap. We told them we didn’t want to proceed with them. They did try to press it saying it was a 5* rated package etc.
Would any gap package you offer be to the same standard as the VW one. Also when, relative to delivery of the new car, are we best to sort out gap with you

Hi aea730

Thanks for getting in touch.

It's always tricky for us to say whether our GAP insurance is exactly the same as the dealers as each one may use a different supplier, and we don't get to see their terms. However more often than not our policy is the same (and sometimes better!) they usually just charge much higher premiums!

One thing to mention is that they do often only offer one type of policy; with ours you can have a choice of cover and policy term etc so you're not just getting a one-size-fits-all policy. You can also view our policy documents online before purchasing to check through T&Cs, whereas the dealers don't normally provide you with this in advance.

In terms of taking out the GAP insurance, once you have a confirmed delivery date you can arrange the policy at that point to start on that date.

I hope this helps - if you have any other questions at all please let me know. You're welcome to contact me directly by email if you prefer katie@ala.co.uk

Thanks,
Katie

Hi,

I have just bought a used 2016 Mercedes.

I have bought the car with a bank loan, as the rate was cheaper overall than a PCP and if my circumstances change I would like to be able to sell the car. Can someone help me with the difference between the cover with real-life examples:

Cover 1 Vehicle Replacement Cost +

Purchase price £20,000
Cost when new £32,000

Cover 2 Back to invoice plus

Purchase price £20,000

I'm just trying to work out which cover would pay off my loan, so I could walk away with no debt in the case of write off.

Cheers,

ALA Insurance

Hi hotcfdog

Thanks for your message!

If your car has been bought using a personal loan, and so isn't attached to the vehicle, we simply treat this as you owning the car outright.

This means that if you purchase the Back to Invoice + we would pay the difference between your insurer's payout and the cash price of the car i.e. £20,000. You can then choose to pay off the remaining balance on the loan, or continue to pay the loan and use the settlements from the insurer and the GAP to buy a new car outright.

With the Vehicle Replacement + policy, it doesn't cover the cost of a brand new car but rather one matching the one you originally purchased i.e. same make, model, specification, age and mileage as the one you've just purchased.

With this the GAP insurance settlement would be paid directly to a garage for the replacement car and you would use the insurer's settlement to pay the balance.

I hope this information is useful and if you have any other questions please let me know.

Thanks,
Katie

Hi there
Thinking of getting Gap insurance but can you tell me whether your policies provide cover for cars that have been modified, specifically, upgraded exhaust system.

Thanks

Hi Lawrence

Thanks for your message and sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

We do have two different providers for our cover - one of them does exclude any modifications completely, however the other does not have these restrictions, however they don't cover the cost of the modifications.

If you would like me to provide you with a quotation on this basis, please feel free to pop an email to me katie@ala.co.uk with the details and I'll be happy to help.

Thanks,
Katie

Can you explain the difference in the policies? Which does which? (which covers mods and which doesn't).

A response above said that mods aren't mentioned in the policy wordings, so aren't as issue (or course I understand they don't cover the cost of the mods, it just doesn't invalidate it). Has this now changed?

Just a quick question, are your policies transferable to another car? ie/ I have a 10 month old car I'm par ex-ing for a new one but a 4 year GAP policy - can I transfer to the new car plus a little cash top up or does it need to be a new policy?

I’m not going to trawl 19 pages for a question that may not have been asked yet, so forgive me for asking your stance on classics;

Is there an age limit or value limit on older cars?
Agreed valuation?
Cover throughout Europe?

Thanks

Hi bungle

Thanks for getting in touch.

Sorry for the confusion! The newer of the two underwriters we currently use has only been working with us since September 2019 and so wouldn't impact any policy that you already have with us.

The other underwriter is one we have been using for a number of years and so the answer for them would stay the same.

Hope that helps, happy to clarify biggrin

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Zipee

(We just need a George today, and then we've got the Rainbow set!) tumbleweed

Our policies are transferrable - we do have to cancel the old policy and set up a new one but this just means the new policy is appropriate for the new car, rather than basing it on the original one (which could be quite different!) We daily pro rata the original premium you paid, use that as a credit against the cost of the new policy, and there might be a balance to pay.

If you'd like to run through this for your policy, or have any questions, please feel free to drop me an email with your policy details and the new car information smile

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Olas

Thanks for your message.

That's no problem - its easier to ask smile

Unfortunately we don't cover classics; the car has to be less than 10 years old to qualify for our policies frown the same applies for our Agreed Value policy as this is slightly different to Agreed Value car insurance.

On a positive note, for cars that are eligible for cover, our policies do cover in Europe as long as your normal motor insurer covers you abroad as they would in the UK.

Thanks again and if you have any other questions please let me know.

Katie

I'm looking at extended warranties. Does anyone have any experience with ALA? My manufacturers warranty expires soon.

I'm trying to work out if I should stay with Porsche on my Cayenne Turbo or go with ALA. Do ALA use Porsche original parts if there is a fault? For example with a transmission related issue do they replace the transmission with a Porsche part?

Thanks Katie, I'll be in touch closer to purchase in that case. Value wise they are not far off.

Hi Cimaguy

Thanks for the message - hope you don't mind me jumping in with some information smile

In the event of a claim, if you take the car to a Porsche garage then they will use Porsche parts when repairing the car, rather than a factored part. The only thing to mention is that, at the moment, the maximum labour rate on our warranties is £60.00 plus VAT - there's no excess to pay if you're claiming on the policy but if Porsche charge a higher labour rate (which is unfortunately quite likely) you would need to cover those additional costs.

I hope this helps and if you have any other questions please reply or pop me an email to katie@ala.co.uk.

Thanks,
Katie

Katie, thank you for this clarification on all the above points - especially the fact that you can take the car to a main dealer, with OEM parts, but labour only covered up to a rate of £60+ vat per hour.

The only other question I would have is when we sell the car, whether the policy can be transferred to the new owner rather than our policy being applied to another car we purchased?

Irrespective, I’ve now taken out a policy on the strength of the previous answers anyhow.

Regards,

Stu
