HS2, whats the current status ?

Is this actually getting built, was looking at the Phase 2 and it seems like pie in the sky, it involves massive tunnelling projects under south Manchester, is that ever going to happen ?

Has it started anywhere else yet ?

The High Speed Rail (Preparation) Act 2013 has received Royal Assent. This act authorises funds to be spent on surveys, to buy property and to pay compensation. This is the kind of work that is being done at the moment.

Actual construction work can't begin until a hybrid bill has been given Royal Assent. Each phase of HS2 will have its own hybrid bill. The hybrid bill for Phase 1 is expected to go through some time this year with construction due to commence in 2017.

They dug rather a lot of big holes in the ground to get HS1 from Ebbsfleet to St Pancras

They are currently digging a big long hole to get Crossrail from Paddington to the east end.

What's so different about Manchester? Will it fall down if somebody tunnels under it?

Hopefully by that time someone in government will realise that wasting all these resources on things people don't really want is destroying the economy.

Yes hopefully but don't hold your breath!!
Goods need to move people don't the madness of face to face business is becoming less important, better roads east to west and more motorway capacity would help the economy far more than the white elephant aka hs2.

I regularly get the train from Lime Street to Euston and it's just over 2 hours. How much quicker is HS2?

I said Heathrow. Leeds to London is 2hrs 20 / across London / Heathrow Express = 3 1/2 hrs.

So you want to spend 2 hours to get to heathrow, then approx another hour getting on the plane...

The North would better be served by spending the HS2 money on Hull-Liverpool train & road improvements, would grow the demand for a true northern rival to Heathrow airport, with Manchester airport being a candidate.

People don't like change of any sort, and it is part of human nature to oppose it. A local council could only want to put up a new lamp post and somebody would complain about light pollution in their bedroom, or people in wheelchairs couldn't get past, or whatever.

NIMBYs abound everywhere. Not so long ago, one of the dafter ideas that came out of Whitehall was to build a dual carriageway between J18/M4 and Southampton (ie. the A36) but they'd do it quietly in little bits so nobody would notice. The trouble is they did notice...

So now we have a bit of high quality dual carriageway called the Batheaston bypass (with its 50 limit, but don't get me started...) and a bit of single carriageway road that is excellent for present day traffic conditions along the A46 between the M4 and the top of the hill before Bath. And he residents of Cold Ashton and the like claimed that as a victory.

Anybody tried to drive from J18/M4 into Bath recently? Fun, isn't it...

Nope. It will never offer the connections I need (in my lifetime). 3 flights a day to SFO? Nope. Don't get me wrong - I'd like there to be some...

I think for a lot of people, it comes more down to the UK not having a limitless pot of (creditors) money to (borrow) out of, and therefore priorities. If HS2 is top of your list then fair enough, but if it isn't for other people then accept it, not label it is nimbyism

Why do you want to travel to SFO 3 times a day

Manchester is far easier to expand than Heathrow- nearby areas such as Wythenshawe is a dump and could easily be flattened
