The Humer Unbeam Interesting Filling Stations Thread

It's nerve-wracking, publishing a book. You hit 'publish' then sit on the internet and cross your fingers that the thing you've spent many months on, driven miles for, and spent money on is actually something that someone wants to buy. It's not the financial aspect, as there's stuff all money in this, but the reassurance that, yes, there are other petrolheads out there into the same stuff as me. I'm the Author and (along with Dicky C, I'm sure) am very grateful for you buying the book, Mike.Five books The UK by region.
Taking pictures at an abandoned filling station on the way to Barry in South Wales, a car stopped, a chap got out and walked towards me. I stopped taking pictures and gave him one of my few bits of Welsh, "Bore da." "Bore da," he replied. "Are from the developers?" "No, I'm interested in petrol stations." He just said, "Huh," walked back to his car and drove away.

I was taking pics of a place in the Vale of Belvoir where you ring a silver bell for service. A chap sees my camera and asks what I’m up to. I explain it’s about interesting old garages and he smiles and walks off. His wife appears. Not quite out of earshot she asks who I am. “Some weirdo”. He says.

My dad spent much of his working life as a petrol pump engineer, and I spent much of my school holiday time with him. Happy memories of map reading in the van from garage to garage fixing pumps. Some of it was at bigger sites, but a lot of it was smaller and sometimes really out of the way places. I guess I've been to more garages and seen inside more petrol pumps than most ! And being car obsessed from as far back as I can remember there was nothing better than getting to snoop round a garage while he fixed a pump.
That reminds me... I used to do some work supplying Murco with grocery products about 17 years ago and there was a chap who worked for them who was very much into the history of filling stations and the associated paraphernalia so I know all about the Murco logo. I'll drop him a line on LinkedIn and recommend your books!

Marvelous, thanks for that. Both SUPER Author and I - SUPER Contributor - think there may be some sort of follow up to the books to capture just these sort of gems. The knowledge will just vanish if we don't get it written down.Like another poster, it's a bit long to go through 50 pages and I may have posted this before. If so I apologize. A garage between Le Mans and Tours, active until four years ago but now empty. I parked up the car and took this photo. For those who don't speak french this is a 2-stroke pump! I can't remember ever seeing one elsewhere. I went past a short while back and the pump has gone now.
'Super' arrived the other day and I have finished browsing though for the first time, it will be revisited! Who knew there was a filling station selling cuttlefish...
Recommended- especially as it is now looking like rain followed by lockdown. Oh, and it contains my favourite: Regal Garage, Upton upon Severn.
