The mugen is great on paper it sounds a bit lacking but when you drive it hard its something to behold, one was up not too long ago for sale. I'm not in a rush to sell mine

Got rid of my FN2 Type R a couple of months ago and I was glad to see the back of it, Loved the way it looked inside and out but everything else was bloody awful.

I bought this car because like the story says, Its the last n/a proper hot hatch. Turbo's are taking over so I wanted to own a rev happy screamer before the inevitable boost took hold.

The ride is unacceptable, I used my track car everyday for a little while and that was more comfortable, it crashes around and seems to find every single little bump in the road. Most uncomfortable car I've ever driven... Such a shame as the seats are unbelievably comfy, when your not driving along that is!

The build quality is pretty bad as well, the centre console on mine rattled like made and it would wobble around when you used the arm rest for resting your arm, some of the interior trim didn't line up properly and it just felt a bit cheap.

Gearbox... That would've been good had the 3rd gear synchro in mine not started to get a bit weak ( i owned a 07 with 38k on the clock) going from second to third it would either pop out of gear or crunch into 3rd.

Driving position... hmm, im only 6 ft but even I struggled to get into a seating position where I felt properly comfortable.... The seat itself though,

Some idiot at Honda decided that when you let some get into the back and return the seat to its upright position that the seat shouldn't go back into your driving position but it will go into my 6 year old nephews driving position, right forward and bolt upright!!

The engine is a gem, just not in a car that big and heavy. It doesn't have any torque, nor does it really have enough grunt when up in the revs to really get the car going, 200bhp and it just didn't feel that fast. Plus when you are in the Vtec rev range it just sound like some young scrote screaming the nuts of 1.1 Saxo with some big bore exhaust.

Ive since replaced with a Golf GTI Edition 30... So much better in every single way, yes I got less kit on my Golf than I did the Civic but I can sacrifice cruise control and buttons all over the steering wheel for driving pleasure.
I don't think "Golf" and "driving pleasure" should ever be in the same sentence.

Don't think you have driven a mk5 Golf then......

On the FN2 front I was mighty disappointed when I had a go in a standard one. Having tried standard and modified EGs,EKs, EP3s, CL7 the FN was far too tame & bumpy.

I cannot understand how Honda released the Type R version with such a quiet discreet engine & exhaust tone. This to me contradicts the whole point of the car.

Yes you can get aftermarket parts but on the Type R I really don't think it should be necessary.

With regard to the Mugen kit, 250hp and the spoiler are very very welcome, the price tag, not so.

On test drives an fn2 does seem a little muted compared to other type R's but its just as nice sounding in VTEC as an ep3 ,nicer inside and has better steering. I loved my old ep3 but would not go back to one after having an fn2... Underrated car in my opinion

I just can't get on with the looks of the FN2. OK the breadvan EP3 is no beauty either but it just about works whereas the FN2 just looks odd to me in that typical Japanese fashion, all sharp angles and weird shapes.

Not sure why they feel every fast car has to look like it's going to turn into a Transformer at any moment? For some cars it's works well, GT-R's for instance but sometimes, especially on smaller cars it just looks odd. When they do try curves they can do them well like the RX-7 and MR2 so not sure what the love affair is with making a car look like someone's hacked at it with a sword. Origami styling I think it'called, whatever it looks naff.

The Mugen 20 is a fantastic drivers' car. Probably the best fwd car I've owned along with the DC2. It's much more engaging than an R26R which was its main competitor at release.

The extra bhp over a standard CTR really shows and the way it engages in the twisty stuff is absolutely magical. The only thing it would benefit from are buckets, which I understand were available, but I suspect were only specified on a couple of cars due to their cost.
