Perhaps I'm missing something, but if they couldn't move the coating, how come the clearcoat thickness reduced?

Right at the end of the article they say it´s been "reduced by about 7 to 10 µm. On some paintworks, that amount could be about 1/4 to 1/2 of the clearcoat thickness!"
That would probably be down to the pre-coating polishing to get a good surface to start with
Whilst removing the unwanted coating it would be impossible just to attack the peaks (the coating) - so it will have reduced clear-coat thickness too around the area they polished.

OK, but that implies the coating had gathered in peaks (which may well be correct) and in-between wasn't coated.

I put C5 on wheels and didn't buff it off (who the heck reads instructions rolleyes ) and it does look a bit rough close up but works fine.

There is a difference (and I'm certainly no shine queen). Valeters are car cleaners. Detailers improve on the factory finish.

Just to add in 1996 when I was doing machine polishing and a bit of wet sanding and all the rest of what you do it was called valeting around the same sort of time lowering your car was called lower'd
Now it's called stanced, I blame the dub scene personally wink

You won't now they are all called detailers
We didn't offer wet sanding it was a cars for sale practice only, it wasn't a massive deal then as standard car paint wasn't the orange peel shower that it is these days , this is all from my own experience of course

I meant 'back in the day', however I do get your point that manufacturer finishes were generally a lot better than the ste people don't even notice today.

Ahh I think back then a gold valet was about £120
And a machine polish was £50 to £80 dependant on how bad it was. If my memory serves me correctly
I do have a siv like a memory thumbup

Thats what valeters do though? Thats why you'd get them on new cars.
