I don't mind the look of estates, can't think of a single car where the saloon looks as good as the estate thinking about it, but the SUV does everything an estate can do but in a more relaxed manor.

I get why someone might want an S4 over a Q5, or an M5 Touring over a X5 M or whatever it is called, but when someone buys an Audi A4 diesel over the Q5 it makes no sense to me.

The saloon always looks better. 3/5 series, C/E class just to name two makes. I've just always found estates ruin the balance of a car. Estates look the same as each other.

In Jaguar land the Sportbrake looks better than the XF on which it is based. In my opinion of course. And has better headroom in the back, overcoming a major weakness of the first generation XF.

Practically speaking the estate is superior. I just find the elongated back ruins the aesthetic. The standard XF looks much better to me.

I normally prefer the estate version of a car and the XF estate is very nice but I do actually think the XF is better looking.

Nah disagree.

For me it goes something like this.....

18 years old you buy a Saxo, Fiesta, you don't really care, just so pleased to have some freedom.
21 you buy something nicer, sporty Clio, 1 series, A3, Golf etc.
24 you buy a hot hatch, GTi, 182, M135i.
27 you buy a coupe, maybe an M3 or something, 911 if you can.
30 you need the space, you get an estate, something like a 535, E350 or maybe an S4 avant or C63 amg. You get get your bikes and boards in the back but still fast.
35 you get the E63 or RS6.
40 you swap that for a Range Rover as you like the space but want more comfort.
45 you keep the Range Rover but also add a 911, XK-R or whatever floats your boat.

Then when you get to your mid 50s you realise there is no need for all that space, there is only you and the missus left in the house, your getting old, you realise you might want to retire shortly, so you buy her an Aygo at £79 a month and you go and buy a 320d saloon.

Saloons to me are for old people or for company cars as the boss says he won''t spend the extra £10 a month on the coupe or the estate. wink

It was said with tongue firmly in cheek.

I can imagine the SUV haters, the German car haters and pretty much any of the usual suspects on here having a bit of a mental reading it.

ha I find estates are for 'older' people, being in my early 30's. If i needed that much practicality, I'd get an SUV. I'd prefer a saloon otherwise for a family, 3/4/5 series, XE/XF etc. Without a family, options are limitless.

I know, a lot of people do.

To be fair, the latest cars from BMW and Jag etc. I do actually like in saloon shape, the F10 is the first 5 series I have liked the look of the saloon over the Touring.

But genuinely before then I always prefer the 5er touring over the saloon, the Audi Avants over the saloons, Merc saloons I just didn't like at all until the W212 E Class.

Saw the blue prototype on the M42 today. Looks like a fat F type initially but then realised it was an SUV. Looks like a Range Rover from the side so not sure if they share a platform.
Not a big Range Rover fan - would never buy a car where the spare wheel is stored outside the car, especially given the price.

I saw a dark one the other day on the A44 by Chipping Norton. Bigger than I was expecting. Looked very nice and sounded very good as it took off in the other direction.

No. This is the second car on the new JLR ally platform. The first is the XE. The third will be the gap-filler between Disco Sport/Evoqueue and RRS
