Seen a few of these back in the 90's

Isn't that how those were raced. so nothing wrong with that IMHO.

if there was a fiat punto/panda painted like that I would have a completely different point of view

I'm in two minds: on the one hand, a replica scheme should definitely have some sort of manufacturer, if not model, link and some sort of go to back up the show. I quite like the scheme on the Audi A1, but if it's a 1.4 diesel it just seems a bit naff; if it's a few hundred brake S1 then all to the good. The Alfa looks great, that R5 colour scheme is nice and as mentioned, would be a better link for a Twingo, Gulf and Martini colours can look fantastic on the right car with an historic motorsport link to the brands.

On the other hand, an owner can make their car like whatever they want, whether it's a pale lime green with bright pink polka dots and yellow stripes, it's up to them. Even if I don't like it, it's more interesting to see on the roads than yet another silver/white/grey/black piece of boredom.

Waay back in the 60's, my mate and i had Ford Prefect and a Ford Anglia, both the 100E shape. and slightly modded. lower suspension, 5 !/2 J rims Aquaplane Head ,. Well before the Le Mans 24 had finshed the first time the GT40 entered, we had the two stripes with Ford along the sills on both cars. Our one and only concession to bulling the cars up!!

Just coming home in Sowerby Bridge this afternoon and drove past a 2000s-era Volvo estate in white with orange Gulf stripes and matching wheels. Looked silly but good.

I like it on the right car.

I'd love to put a racing livery on my E36 but can't decide what would look good.

Personally i'd say the touring car liveries are generally ok for street cars, but GT liveries are not. Especially Gulf; that works on race cars only which are also plastered with sponsors. There isn't a single road car that doesn't look stupid wearing that design.

It's incredibly overused, so any exclusivity an owner thinks they're injecting is lost. Every single one: hurl

There's an 850 estate near me which is stripped, caged and stickered up to look like a touring car.

Fair enough for a track day but I'd feel ridiculous driving round in it on normal roads.

The Gold Leaf livery worked well on the (original) Elan, less so on the special edition S1 Elises they applied it to - I think because the S1 Elise shape was a lot busier.

Thank God it's not a tribute to Jim Clark , who drove a white and green striped Lotus Cortina . I assume...err... 'Jim Clarke' never enjoyed the success of his near namesake .....

I'd agree with most of those examples, but a Mosler? According to Wiki there have been 36 road cars built and "approx 30" race cars. It's only marginally more 'road car' than 'race car' (possibly more race car, depending on how approximate is approx).
