These types of cars and SUV's in general are everything I hate about the car industry right now. It really boils my piss every time I have to turn left at a T junction and some sodding great SUV pulls up on the right and blocks my vision, I'm left staring at at the wing of said car waiting for it to pull out before I can make a move. Sadly these cars are going to be the norm as people just buy into this crap lifestyle ste.

And yet McLaren and Ferrari seem to be able to afford to build sports, super and hypercars without selling their soul to raise cash. At least, I don't think those charity collectors I passed in Woking town centre were collecting for the P1 fund.
Ferarri probably make more from their tatty merchandise than they do from the cars - Ferrari key ring anyone?

The motoring equivalent of a cross between Victoria Beckham and Katie Price, a strange amalgam of lumpen shapes, hideous nose, and an arse that, well, I'll leave that up to you.
Like both of them, aspires to be high class, but amusingly fails by trying too hard and reveals their inner .
This car, and it's designers, should be taken out and shot.

You have to wonder at just who buys these things. My God it's ugly not just ghastly in you face over the top ugly but ugly on a fundamental level. My daughter has an ugly cat, but it is not without charm, this is. I mean what need does it satisfy that cannot be fulfilled elsewhere in the BMW catalogue? Quick? Big? White? Erm?

I'm done with trying to understand the lack of good taste in buyers of cars (German cars in particular), we used to laugh at the styling of Japanese cars in the 60s and 70s. Do the purchasers of these abominations imagine themselves as "envied"?

Well I like them.

And I am not like Beckham at all.

I see no reason why one cannot have a car with a high driving position ( my wife prefers it ) together with decent performance and handling ( which these cars possess ) .

It is nothing to do with "class". perceived or otherwise. I see no reason why someone who wants a decent handling, performance orientated car which also happens to have an elevated driving position, cannot be provided for.

I can only assume that Matt had to sign up to producing a review on this monstrosity, in order to get on the test of the M2? Swings and roundabouts.

...... plus selling millions of superminis to patriotic Italians.

McLaren's success is quite astonishing, given the development of their products, their involvement in F1, and their independence from a huge multimnational to bankroll their operation. Do they make a profit year on year???? What's supporting the business?

I've only seen one X4, and that was in the BMW showroom. Had no idea that the UK was diesel only for these cars, however that doesn't surprise me.

I've no shame admitting that I joined the SUV club for family transport about 18 months ago. I know they rile some people, however must say that I'm completely hooked. Sorry!

What an absolutely ghastly abortion of a car. Still, the buyer gets what the buyer wants and it seems they want this type of crap, doubtless they'll sell them by the boatload.

I like it too. No idea why PHers get so worked up by other people's choices.

Agree. I'm quite amused by the significant spouting of hate towards cars that are deemed 'non-PH worthy'.

Anyways, back of topic - I saw a red one yesterday and thought it looked quite smart!

Because they have to look at these things when they drive down the road. The driver doesn't from his lofty perch.

BMW are making some hideous looking cars at the moment. X4, X6 and those awful GT things!
See, this is where the second hand market is so great. I can't admit to liking the looks of the series GT much, but the interior is fantastic and as much of my time whilst driving is spent, errr, on the inside, I'm going to buy one. Of course, because they're so bloody ugly, they're also a rather cheap way into a very nicely spec'd car. Perfect upgrade to my 330D touring.

It is the worst kind of reverse snobbery. No shortage of it here.

I could bang on about how much I dislike hot Renaults ( I really, really loathe the things for reasons I cannot be bothered to go into now ) but that would not be gracious.

We should respect other perspectives.

My take on these "sporty SUV's" is that if someone wants an SUV, why not have a version that is orientated toward driving better? How can that not be a good thing?

And in terms of styling, well they are what they are - If you take a 3 series hatchback and make it higher up - you end up with a car that looks like an X4 !

Evidently untrue. My neighbours wife has an X4. She is a palliative care nursing manager and not orange at all. She likes sporty BMW's and had to sell her 330d touring because it grounds out on the unmade lane that serves our little clutch of houses. So she changed it to an X4, which drives just as well for her and doesn't get stuck. She shops at Sainsburys.

Don't be a cock.

I can sort of see the point if you live in a remote area / on a farm / down a track etc. and could do with a little extra ground clearance. - Audi's "Allroad", rather than "off road" description works well for these sort of cars - but did they have to make it look so disgusting? BMW haven't designed a nice-looking SUV since the original X5 IMO.
