Mine doesn't have edc and I find it fine on our roads. In fact I purposely looked out for one without it after reading the horror stories from E34 and E31 owners and how much it cost to replace. It's stiff but I don't find it overly so, and I've never found it unruly even on very rough roads. It's stiffer than my E36 was but I think some of that is the fact the wheels are two inches bigger. I'd like to try an E92 on the 18's to see the difference between them.

Can you configure the settings on the key with the M4 like you can on the E9x M3? I recently discovered this whilst playing with the M settings and now have it set to sport throttle as soon as it starts up

I hated mine with EDC in sport mode because it was miles too stiff but in comfort mode it rode lovely even on 19's I thought, my brother in law has a E93 M3(even more heavy than the already heavy M3 and on 19's) without EDC and I was really impressed with the way that was out of the box to be fair.

Hence why I said in a previous post that the E9x M3 is very well judged as it is even without EDC, but typical of BMW and much like having the DCT...is that back then it was an option that cost more money so it was sold as being the bees knees so plenty ticked the option box.

Hindsight has shown that both the DCT gearbox and EDC aren't really needed at all and its just another way for BMW to make more money. biggrin

A manual gearbox and standard suspension has always been the best way I reckon. driving

But you hated your manual and have always previously said the car is much more suited to the DCT.

I did and the S65 really does suit the DCT far better thumbup

I just sometimes go into dinosaur mode and prefer the old ways of doing things occasionally that's all smile and it is important to embrace the modern way...I just struggle with it sometimes and I am also not a massive fan of the EPAS on current BMW's either sadly but appreciate that's the modern way of doing things.

I agree with you on EPAS on most normal BMWs, it is a very unnatural feeling.

The steering on F80 M3 is actually not too bad at all.

Sad. Why do we need 'modes' to drive a performance car? How doa driver know what kind of bump or surface is coming up? Please, please bring back an M car that can deal with anything without the modes. E34, E36, E34 didn't have this unnecessary crap, and were some of the best cars ever. Shame.

I agree and this is why I didn't spec edc on my e92 M3. The car is fine in standard mode without the need for edc.

I agree the car is fine without EDC but there are different settings for the throttle/steering and traction control...so why not go the whole hog and have adjustable dampers too.

If the car didn't have any electronics on it then I can see the attraction of keeping it plain and simple but the recent M cars aren't really like that anymore.

This thread is about the M4, not E92. The M4 doesn't have EDC, it has adaptive suspension which adjusts in real time to the road conditions and driving style.

"Adaptive M suspension.
The Adaptive M suspension's electronically controlled shock absorbers constantly adjust to road conditions as well as driving style within milliseconds, guaranteeing optimal road contact in every situation, the best possible traction and even more agile handling.
The suspension settings can be adjusted from comfortable to sporty-dynamic via the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes.

Comfort mode ensures comfortable handling during everyday driving, and also increases safety in case sudden swerving is necessary. In Sport mode, ample comfort is maintained, but dampening is reduced and contact with the road is more direct – ideal for country roads and uneven racecourses. Sport+ mode offers minimal dampening and maximum driving dynamics on level roads and racetracks."

In summary then EDC is pointless on the E92 M3 and adaptive damping is ineffective on the M4 because of it's well renowned traction problems...I can now see why people preferred it when things were far more straight forward and you just got in and drove the car!

Lee, the damping is fine, the more cars I own, the more I drive, the less store I put in people who have test driven a car for a few miles including pro journos.

The M3/4 would be perfect for you, it handles better than an e92, has better damping and has lashings of that torque stuff you love! thumbup

I liked the EDC on my E92. It allowed me to choose the suspension stiffness.

The adaptive suspension on the M4 is better as it again allows a choice of stiffness, however the car can override this based on the situation. For example it can fully stiffen the suspension even in comfort mode if the conditions dictate it.

My M4 doesn't have traction issues related to the suspension (there were revisions in Sept last year which may explain that). It can struggle to put all its power down in damp conditions but that's only to be expected (and enjoyed!). In the lower gears, you can deliberately break traction on dry roads. Surely that's part of having a powerful rear wheel drive car?

I am guilty of believing the negative press to be fair that I've read on here and in magazines and I haven't driven one to see for myself.

I don't personally have that much of an issue with poor traction and that's what I liked a lot with my TVR and it only really adds to the fun. smile

It does sound like the latest revisions have improved things too.
